Sea dweller rarity?

I was looking for a black sub today at a AD while the gf grabbed her dad a fathers day gift (a Millgauss)

He brought up a sea dweller instead possibly for me .
Are you hard to come by like the submariner? Thinking of a black one

More rare running into someone that has one. Subs are just more popular.

With that being said, the SD history is awesome and has better tolerances than the sub(which you will not use, I assume) for deep water as well as the helium release valve.

Plus that ugly cyclops is hideous on the sub.

YMMV

The current SD has an ugly cyclops as well.

It's among the easier sports watches to source.

Yup, I agree. The current SD is ruined by that, IMO.

Sea Dweller > Black Sub. Put it on your hand, it will let you forget the Sub, and the red line is a nice touch.

SD43mm is really nice if you have a chance to get it and fits wrist!

I tried an SD 43-red yesterday and am in love with it. I’m confused whether to go with a sub or a SD when its time to get another watch...one more reason is that this is a bigger size than my gmt.. it adds to the variety. To the OP’s question, my AD says its not that easy to source and the wait time will be higher than a sub.

the Sd43 has its own unique style and is not easy to obtain. I wore a Sub for over 20 years and now sport the "43" daily

Rolex makes many more subs than SD's.

The price difference between the sub and SD43 comes into play for many buyers. I originally wanted a sub, but the SD43 was a better fit for my wrist size. The red line adds an extra punch.

If you want a truly rare Sea Dweller, find one with "COMEX" on the dial. Otherwise Sea Dwellers are not rare. They are in demand and never enjoyed the sales numbers of the Submariner, but they're out there for purchase. My personal preference is for the SD4K at 40mm, and I have 7 3/4" wrists.

The wait list for SD is probably equivalent to a sub

Because sub is produced in larger quantities and comes in date plus no date. (Supply is higher but also demand is equally higher)

Therefore presumably the wait list for SD and sub is same. And the premium seems to justify that

I think I need to try this big boy on to decide. I should be able to pull off the size of it being a bigger guy. Interestingly split on how hard to come by though lol

The secondary market premium will tell u the level of difficulty to get one through AD channels.

The longer the waitlist, the higher the premiums.

I’d say it’s pretty equal/ on par with the sub based on what the market is telling everyone.
Some slight premiums on brand new grey pieces

Those that trade with discounts for brand new grey tells you how easy it can be to attain one via AD. Sports models like the air king, milgauss and explorer 1 can be had at or below retail MSRP.

It goes to tell you that if you put your name on the supposedly interest or wait list, the period of waiting is Significantly shorter Free Market pricing gives you every information you ever need.

Why do you even need to ask there is split opinions on the attainability

Is obvious ain’t it. Follow the prices dictate by the market

Buy from a TS. There is really no markup when you consider sales tax. I wanted one but if I pay 12k plus I wanted the MK1. Wasn’t hard to find right now but they don’t last very long. Maybe a few days and sold. Mk2 dials might be a different story but that was never an option for me. A true 50th anniversary sd43 with little to no markup was too hard to pass up.

A bird in the hand and all that. Take advantage of the fact that they are not in great demand on the grey market.

If only buying form an AD I would say it’s in the middle of the pack for being in demand. But all that changes. The biggest reason for that is that’s it very big. Tall and heavy. It’s definitely a stand out piece for Rolex. Not everyone can wear it or want to wear a watch this big.

If I was an average joe I would pick the submariner over this watch because on the wrist they are Similar and I could save over $2,000. Plus the name cache of the sub. But owning both I can honestly say that the SD43 blows the sub out of the water if you have the wrist for it. The minute they take the red writing off of the SD43 the price will skyrocket. I think in the next few years the MK1 dials will start to command a premium over the mk2 dials as well. Look at the Kermit for reference.

The word rarity should not be used with the word Rolex yes some are made in smaller numbers but rare they are not. They are all massed produced watches at one making a million units a year over the passed few years around 850000 units per year.

No rarity, but a great watch if you have the wrist for it.
Much more special than a Sub IMHO

I actually think that the SD4000 is quite a rare beast as it only had a production run of 3 years. I've never seen another in person other than the one I have.

Interesting. So are you saying that they make a million watches total a year or a million of each type of watch? 1 million subs. 1 million sd43 exc..
