Let’s talk sunglasses.

Yesterday, I dropped and broke my Maui Jim 202s Of course it wasn’t my fault, I blame it on climate change... .. .. Anyway, I also have a pair of Ray Ban’s which I like very much, but was planning on replacing the MJs with an identical pair; but I know there are a lot of options out there. What brand/model do you guys prefer?

Geez, all kinds for choose from. For me I prefer aviator style mostly so have had Maui Jim’s, Ray Ban, Randolph Engineering, Eagle Eyes, Gucci, and Cartier to name a few. I call Hawaii home and have several pairs of MJs. Their customer service is top notch. I still have two pair of MJs now. Check with MJ customer service about a repair, would be cheaper than buying a new pair and they can replace lens too for very reasonable prices. I’ve done repair two different times with great results.

Cheers, Tim

I wear Costa Del Mar Harpoons in tortoise shell with the green/amber mirrored glass 580 lenses. They’re great for everything around here in Florida except offshore fishing. For going offshore I wear the same with blue/grey 580 glass lenses.

I had a pair of Revo I really liked. The clarity of the lenses were unrivaled. I can’t find them at a dealer around me so moved to Costa.

Ray Ban’s are great glasses with an exceptional warranty. Maui Jim’s are great as well.

I have a few pairs.

One for the car which came from a petrol station in Holland after I forgot mine on a looong drive so pulled in and bought a pair. Wish I’d got 2 as they are very comfy.

Pair of ray bans for day to day usage, some oakleys for when I know they may get damaged or lost and favourite of all, my brothers old Royal Navy issued sunglasses he wore whilst serving overseas, but I wear them sparingly as had to make some repairs already and would be sad if they ever got damaged.

Like timepieces, you need a collection. So Ray Ban, Oakley, Tom Ford, Versace... and a few ZZ Top.

I’ve been buying Mykita sunglasses for the past 5-8 years. Love them.

I picked up a pair of montblanc sunglasses about a year ago, but I find them just “ok”

In the past I had Maui’s, Ray bands, chrome hearts, and many other brands.

I find Mykita to be my personal favorite

Ray Ban was a Bausch & Lomb brand and were made in my city of Rochester NY. I thought their glasses, both frame and lens, were top notch. Sadly B&L sold them in 1999 to Luxottica Group and manufacturing moved elsewhere. I’ve purchased one pair since the sale and I was very disappointed in the product.
I’ve used Revo and Maui Jim since then. For me, MJ’s are the superior brand. I wear prescription glasses (progressive) and the clarity of my Maui’s is incredible.
Someday I may try Persol glasses. I’ve heard good things about them.

I like my Oakley Oil Can & Gas Can lenses - crisp and clear. The wraparound frames keeps dirt out of my eyes at the track.

But with mandatory masks, fogging is a problem.

Another fan of the MJs, and as another member suggested, call MJ about a repair before you replace them. I have a 12 year old pair that I’ve had repaired twice, and in my experience, they’ll either offer a reasonable repair fee, or a generous discount on a new pair.

Hey Paul,
For a man of your means get'em all.
Ray Ban Aviators & Wayfarer. Classic. Plus the so called Round Classic.
Throw in a Balorama ( discontinued , available only in vintage and second hand ) for that classic wrap around shades.

Oakley T-Wire 90s oval mirrorized.

Sunglasses were my first collection.

Regards

It's just all about health, happiness & family. The rest are just necessary inconvenience we have to deal with.

Honestly Paul, They’re all Luxotica and mostly outsourcing lenses now. 20yrs ago I swore by Rayban and Serengeti.

But with plastic frames, cheaper lenses and Corning Optics going really cheap, I now buy mid brands and get a fresh pair every year. UVA and UVB protective levels with newer plastic lenses wear out faster too by the way.

Persol are probably the best frames for the asking price.

Barton Perreira, Oliver Peoples, Persol, and Rayban for hanging out. I have a lot of glasses.

Just picked up some Roka's to wear while running and I really like them.
