Need Advice on a Complex Rolex Decision
Friends,
A dilemma...I have two Rolex DateJust watches: 1. a just serviced 1986 16013 in Two Tone with Black Dial, 2. a rusted out 1989 16030 that needs a new movement which will cost approx. $1,900 and full refurbish at $3,000 including new dial and hands. It's estimated that the case and bracelet are worth $1,500. It is, however, a conversion to two tone from a 16030. Ultimately I would like to buy a current (ideally new) 36mm Datejust. The first watch has some sentimental value but ignore that for the time being. Do I grab the $1,500 cash from the rusted Datejust and sell the 1986 to apply toward a purchase order on the new 36? Do I fix the rusted watch and try to sell in this market for more money? Do I keep the 1986 DateJust and enjoy it and put in more money for a new DateJust? Are there other alternatives or strategies I should look at? What would you do? |

I wouldn't bother fixing up the rusted out one to get more money, just kind of seems like a waste of time for such LITTLE money.

Well today Rolex watches are now little more than £££££$$$$€€€€€€$$$£££ object things and like all things it's only worth what someone will pay, IMHO not worth the money or effort to restore it.

No point fixing that old DJ. How much are we talking? It wont be much so not worth the effort.
Just scrap it for whatever you can get + the just services DJ + add some money for the newer DJ36. |

Sounds like you’re over concerned about the money. Maybe Rolex isn’t for you..

I wouldn't fix the rusted one. Good luck on whatever you choose.

I suspect the rusted out 36 is worth less than $1500 when being sold by a private party.
You having the rusted out 36 repaired and then trying to sell it will only put you deeper in the hole. You already own a recently serviced 36tt with black dial, which is a great watch. I would take whatever I could get for the rustbucket and enjoy my newly serviced 36. |

I would not restore the rusted out watch as it is not worth it for the value at the end. I would move both watches for as much as I could get and then go buy the watch I want.
