Maybe he shoulda bought a Rolex

Reported in The Age today:

No conviction for woman who stole $1.5m watch

A FORMER prostitute who stole a $1.5 million Swiss watch from a casino high-roller while he showered has been fined $1000 without conviction.

Now an exotic dancer and university student, Michelle Taylor, 21, earns the latter amount weekly.

The County Court heard the former teenage prostitute stole the watch from a Chinese businessman at his VIP room in Crown Towers after a $300-an-hour session on January 27 last year.

Taylor, then 19, took the watch from property developer Hong Wei Han's bedside drawer while he showered.

She believed the watch, which was studded with 580 diamonds, was a fake, the court heard.

Yesterday, Chief Judge Michael Rozenes heard Taylor stole it because she wanted to punish Mr Han for mistreating her.

She argued that language barriers had created a misunderstanding as to which sex acts were appropriate during their session.

She told police: "I wanted to hurt him, I guess."

The court hearing was told the made-to-order, one-off Patek Philippe watch was found hours later under Taylor's mattress in the dormitory of the Daily Planet brothel in Elsternwick.

Taylor, of Docklands, pleaded guilty to one charge of theft.

In sentencing, Judge Rozenes said he took into account Taylor's youth. "The theft was spontaneous and you did not know the value of the watch, thinking it was a fake," he said.

The court heard that Taylor, a former student of Melbourne Girls Grammar, was no longer a prostitute and had "turned her life around". She was now studying audio production at RMIT University.

Judge Rozenes said usually the theft of substantial jewellery was met with substantial punishment, but he took into account the media coverage of her offence, which had strained her relationships with her parents.

The court heard Taylor had two prior offences including shoplifting from a supermarket.

"In the end, there was no real harm done, the watch having been returned to its rightful owner in a relatively short period of time," the judge said.

Taylor cried in relief as Judge Rozenes imposed the $1000 fine without conviction.

"There is every reason to believe you will not be in court again," he said.

Agreed... if he can afford a $1.5 million PP, he can afford to lose it. I'm surprised he would have called the police considering the services he just paid for.... oh yeah, that's legal in Vegas, isn't it? Still, he's the tosser.

Vegas? You need a geography lesson, boy!! Last time I looked, Vegas didn't have a Crown Towers hotel, nor (being a landlocked city) does it have a Docklands. And where is the "Daily Planet brothel in Elsternwick." Elsternwick is not a suburb of Vegas. Don't sully Vegas' reputation. No one there would have been wearing a $1.5 MM PP. They would more likely have had a Daytona Leopard. It's got much more flashy over the top bling to it.

Hey, I live in a logging town in Canada... what do I know?

I just assumed that if a guy is going to press charges against a hooker for theft, that prostitution had to be legal... thereby being in Vegas.

I have never been to Vegas, so those locations have no meaning to me. I just Googled Elsternwick and it came up as Australia.

If protitution isn't legalized where this happened, the police should have given the watch back to the girl and thrown the guy in the slammer overnight and sent him to 'john' school.

I have a feeling this lil girl could be missing a few fingers in the future if his friends pay her a visit.
