PAM1116 Decision

Hi everyone. Ive been a member of this forum and an avid reader since 2016, but this my first post. I recently ventured into the world of Panerai with a purchase of a 670. I absolutely love the watch. The fit and finish are exceptional and the watch truly makes me happy every time I look at it.

I got a call from the Panerai Boutique and he asked me to come in to take a look at the 1116. The watch is stunning in person. From what I understand there is only 1 left in the US. I know that in recent history Panerai has released limited edition models and the following year they follow up with a similar looking watch.

I consider myself a watch collector and we have a long history as a family of a tradition of passing on time pieces to the next generation. This is where the 1116 appeals to me. I am embarrassed to say that my knowledge of collectible Panerai watches is limited. I would be interested if anyone has any insights or thoughts on this watch from that perspective.

Thanks!

Like you, was looking for a piece(s) I could get my wife's kids (never had any of my own by choice). Long story short, the wife's daughter loves the 1118, another limited edition 70 year warranty timepiece, and for her it is the looks she loves. She didn't want a Apple watch, said no to a Rolex, no to Swatch....

For ME, it is knowing the 70-year warranty is there so when I hand it down she has no worries about getting it services/fixed, etc. So there's confidence that she never needs to worry, that even when I'm long gone she has nothing to worry about with the watch, so wear it, as it'll be serviced AND fixed gratis by Panerai if/when the time comes.

Thought the watch is beautiful, there are other pieces I would consider before it, specially at that price. But if you like it, then go for it!

Are you referring to other Panerai models?

I appreciate you sharing your story Steve. What are your thoughts on the 1118?

Movement-gate aside it's been great. Exactly as expected lume-wise and she keeps the time well. Last weekend by accident i briefly scraped her on the side of my home and the bezel had concrete bits... Panic set in for a few seconds... Wiped it off hoping... can't see any damage to the bezel. Most impressive!

So if you own a 670 you like the specialty Panerai’s. The 670 is on another level of cool. So if your into something really special, the 1116 fits that category. It’s hard for me to think about those two watches in terms of owning because I can’t. But heck if your able to buy the upper level Panerai’s I bet you would love the 1116. I’ll play devils advocate now, you can buy a SS for a 1/3 of the price. But if your into collecting the specialty Pam’s this fits that category.

Id you could, take some pictures. We’d love to see how it looks.

I do feel fortunate that I am in a position to be able to buy these types of watches. Come a long way from living off of $25 a week in college.

To your point I have looked at several of the 45 mm Panerai watches with the SS case that are 1/4 or 1/3 of the price. I do love watches with unique complications that is why the 670 was a no brainer for me. This is probably why I didn’t buy the 1116 on the spot.

I did not take any pictures of the 1116 at the boutique. I’ll upload some pics of my 670 as soon as I figure out how to compress the image size.

I've gotten into Panerai recently too. I really like the brand and what they stand for. I honestly had the opportunity to buy a 1116. I thought the dial looked really cool. I liked the Platinum aspect. I balked a bit at the price because I just wanted to use that money toward other watches I had on my list. If you love it, then definitely grab it. And you can't beat the 70 year warranty. That is clutch and I hope Panerai truly lives up to it.

Thanks for the feedback. Allegedly the watch will be re-priced to $40k on July 1st at that point I am definitely out. It’s clear to me that a good portion of the price tag is driven by the prepaid maintenance cost of the 70 year warranty.
