For those who have trouble getting on lists
It’s always the same cycle, Rolex launches something, everybody starts by being super critical, little by little the incomings start and after about a year the watch is total unobtainium and everyone is whining about availability.
It was that way with the colorful OPs, it was that way with the BLNR, it was that way with the YG green Daytona, it was that way with so many other references. Of course, there is the occasional ceramic Daytona or BLRO where everybody wants one from day one, but most of the time, there is a window of a few weeks where one has the opportunity to actually get something. So while everybody still has their eyes crossed from that new backwards GMT, try getting on a list for the excellent iteration of the Airking now while the response is lukewarm and thank me later. Or don’t, but then don’t come around complaining when everybody wants one. Not trying to hype anything, just highlighting a dynamic people often seem to miss and are sad about down the road. Generally with Rolex, always move in when you have a feeling that it’s odd that the general public seems to be sleeping on it. PSA over, hope all of you who want one of the novelties get what you desire!

So basically you are saying buy a watch that the general public doesn’t want.

For those who have trouble getting on lists
i’m not sure if there is much of an opportunity for anyone for the new releases, especially not the new GMT. like someone mentioned above me, my AD confirmed they have been getting a large number of requests for the gmt and air king since the announcement

The YG green Daytona didn’t do well when it came out at Basel 2016 and was actually obtainable.
It didn’t start picking up steam until 2019 and took off when John Mayer talked about it being in his collection w/ Hodinkee. |

I’ve said previously that the new AK will be a gigantic hit. In a few years it will be the piece everybody wants.
How do I know? Because every time I see a watch that I find ugly, people want it. I’m like a counter hype detector. |

The only reason I care about popularity is that I can get what’s not yet hugely popular, while I’m not big enough of a whale to get what is.

what does your gut tell you about the three palm dial motifs? I like the green one the most in the catalogue. But I think the silver dial palm motif will be the rarest of the three for collectors.

I didn’t like anything this year or last year and have not asked for anything new. If I was offered any of the new watches I would still say no. Sometimes watches grow on me but I only buy what I like. |

I’m only interested in watches that I plan to keep a lifetime, not looking for a quick buck. I know that’s unpopular nowadays but IMO it’s a foolish market right now that is supported by overspending and overprinting in the public sectors. Rolex is going after emerging markets rather than supporting their aging base. I can’t blame them but also can’t agree. If they were interested in keeping customers happy I think they would producing things like Turn-o-Graphs by the boatload. Instead they play the manufactured demand game similar to what Ferrari has done over the last 15 years. Grand Seiko is more Rolex than Rolex is nowadays.

If there was going to be a modern Rolex that climbs and drops like a rock, i could see this being the one. I think right handed wearers are under estimating how bad it’s going to look. |

I'd wager that all the interest in the new GMT is probably more speculation than end user applications (like most new releases)
The first person who buys one Grey will be braver than I They'd want to REALLY plan on keeping it for life |

This mindset only adds to all the waitlist BS.
So we should get on the waitlist for a watch we don't like because maybe, just maybe, we might be able to get it anyway, and by then we might like it more (or it becomes valuable)? No wonder nobody can get what they want from the AD. |

That's why I got my name down for the Sprite (or what ever you wanna call it) immediately.....this is going to be a red hot model in 6 months time....although I probably won't get one for 12-18 months....we will see.

This was true a few years ago. I managed to score a TT Bluesy and an OP41 yellow from a local AD with no purchase history. Where I live, the Bluesy is not popular, and a yellow watch even less.
Today though almost everything is hot because a big chunk of the increased demand comes from people buying to invest. So it got a lot harder. |

Yes - I spoke to my AD over the weekend. Demand for all is very high so even the AK has a high demand. However, the 'wrong' GMT is insane and apparently the demand is off the scale and everyone is asking for it. Will be complete unobtanium for some time to come. Also now I think many just see this sort of model and take one because they know it will be double RRP on grey sites and even if you don't want to sell with inflation going through the roof these things are becoming a decent asset class.......
