Basement Plumbing question
Hello everybody,
In my basement, I have two pipes coming out of the floor with caps on them. (See pic). Recently, it rained heavy here and the town sewer in front of my house got backed up and some water was squirting out from under the cap. I have since called the town to clean the sewer. so that the water flows better and not back into my house. Are these clean out pipes where you would remove the cap to put in a snake and clear out a clog? If yes, why would somebody glue the cap on (making it hard to remove to clean the clog). How do you remove the cap? There is no nut on top to put a wrench on it. Do they just pop off or do you turn them with some special tool. The cap feels like plastic and it's on tight. I can't remove it with my hand. Before you say 'call a plumber', they want $400 to just show up. I am just trying to learn more about the plumbing in my basement. |

Pipes for a rough in, should you want to put in a bathroom in your basement if you ever wanted to finish it.
A cleanout usually is PVC with a threaded cap (usually a square to grab on to) to unscrew and snake out. |

Basement Plumbing question
I’d spend the $400…you don’t want a sewer backing up into your house…I’ve been there and done that

What has been said above. I will add they most likely aren’t glued. Just tight because that’s how pvc works. Not including the extra adhesive from the paint.

Looks odd to be a rough in with two equal sized drain pipes within a foot of each other.
This is exactly how my clean out access pipes look with one elbow going to the main drain down pipes from my waste stack and the other going out to the street. The lack of a screw cap means nothing. The one in one of my homes had a coffee can over it. Thankfully it was outside.

As far as removing the pipe. Go to Home Depot and get a pvc pipe compression ratchet strap. Looks identical to an auto oil filter wrench if you remember those, but with a hard rubber strap to grip the pipe.

I would add some length to them and glue on caps.

2 pipes same size next to each other? Doesn’t seem like plumbing rough to me.
I would think they are clean outs |

Looks like a drain clean out. One towards the house and the other towards sewer.

You should be able to tap the cap up and off with a crowbar or cats paw. The ‘clog’ was as likely to be overcapacity within the municipal sewer. Some areas with shallow common sewers - both sanitary and storm water - can be more likely to back up into adjacent properties.
Are you in a newer home in an older area? |
