So it appears the black dial for the yellow gold DD40 is gone, however the black onyx is still there. Asked AD and they said yup

According to Rolex.com, the Day-Date 40 Yellow gold with black dial or black onyx dial is still available as of today's date: 08/27/2022

Black dial was indeed available and still is. It's called "Bright Black." It was available with sticks or baguette markers, but sticks seems to have been discontinued.

I own the Day-Date YG #228238 with black dial and diamond baguettes.

It was not called, stick dial. It was called Black Diagonal Motif and it is discontinued.

Wonder why Rolex keeps discontinuing the DD40 dials? If anything they should be giving us more options.

Sticks are the hour markers.

There was a regular "Bright Black" and "Black Diagonal Motif" dial. The "Bright Black" dial was available with sticks or diamond baguette markers. The Black Diagonal Motif dial was only available with stick markers.

No, there was only one option in black dial and stick markers. It was the motif dial. I have one.

Yes, and that black motif dial was my favorite. This is the one I wanted. Right now, there isn’t a DD40 I really want anymore.

DD40 seems to be moving towards more exotic stone/baguette dials. Probably to increase exclusivity (i.e. price).

This clearly seems to be the case with the DD36.

Yea, seems to be also how it's been made more attractive to women, too. DD36 has many configurations that cross the "time-telling jewelry" vs "timepiece" threshold. More stones, but don't think nearly as much in the way of exotic material dials.

But, if it's working on the 36...

The stick/lume options are nearly gone from DD40 in YG.
The champagne dial is left
No such option in DD40 RG.
Missing from the entire DD36 range

The black diagonal motif was the only one that was of interest to me (other than the new green Roman that is unobtanium).

I sincerely miss the dial choices Rolex used to offer... the jubilee dials, the pyramid dials, etc. Now they're mostly all pretty bland.

They should. Becasue they're not going to lower prices... Plus some of the dials are too similar to datejusts.

Also wouldn’t shock me if eventually the DJ41 diamond dials shifted to baguettes for the same reasons (more expensive, fits the size better, are Rolex’s “man diamonds”).

But motifs as exclusive to DJ does make some sense. And, not that I’m in the DD purchase demographic, but wish those stone dials were available without diamonds…

This makes sense as the DD isn't a dress watch and is really only a statement piece. For the money, you can truly get yourself a discrete high-end dress piece in the PM of your choosing rather than a wrist full of bright gold and diamonds.
