Rolex DSSD VS PAM 312
Hey guys, I need your help for my next watch purchase. I'm tossing up between these two models.
Which would you recommend and why? |

I sense some bias here. Is the DSSD so much more superior? I love the simplicity of the Panerai, it's comfort is much better than the Rolex, and unfotunately, the DSSD just never looks right on a strap.....
I do love the bezel on the DSSD and it feels indestructable except I'm concerned about the bezel cracking or falling off like I've heard on GMT IIc's. |

2 different watches, so therefore you need to buy them both.

Are you a collector or just want a watch to buy?
What watches you have right now? Have you tried on either? Where/when would you wear this watch for? (work, weekend, etc.)

You should have posted it in the Panny section. There you are more likely to get comments from people that know both brands. Many people here will suggest Rolex having never touched a Panny let alone own one. The SDDS has a great following here. It is also somewhat of a technical marvel, but at what price? Personally, I find it too thick, top heavy, and adorned with "Casio-style" graphics that are an embarrassment to Rolex. All of the negatives (in my opinion) stem totally from the pursuit of a silly depth rating. If this is your first watch, buy the Panny or some other Rolex like the GMT-IIC. If you have a Panny and no Rolex, buy the SDDS. If you have a Rolex (Sub, SD, GMT, etc) and no Panny, I'd buy the Panny. Some other things to think about. The Panny dresses up and changes looks very quickly via straps. It's also large, but not crazy thick so you can wear it under most shirt sleeves. Neither of the two are the case with the SDDS. If you have a dozen watches, many of which are dressy and many of which fill the bill as a sport/dive watch, than pick what you like best. Both are "top shelf" watches. |

Sounds like you are already "pre-sold" on the PANNY.
DON'T go for the DSSD if you have so much hesitation; personally this DSSD has become my daily tool watch. It's drop dead beautiful IMO (but everyone has an opinion don't they ?) Anyone that complains about the size/heft/and boldness of the DSSD are probably more accustomed to "classic sized watches" with a more conservative look (nothing wrong with that). You need to really assess what it is that you are looking to achieve with either watch and try them both on (believe me ....you'll know when to pull to the trigger; the RIGHT WATCH will eat away at you until you decide). Good luck

What movement is in the Pam? Is it one of the new in-house movements or an ETA? I like the design of the DSSD much more.

I've tried on both and feel the size fo the DSSD is better, but the Panerai is more comfortable. Watch is for a daily wearer, for jeans, going out, sports etc. This is tough. Thanks for the responses, much appreciated. |

If you already have a PAM, get the DSSD...and then get the 312 later..
You NEED to have both.... If you have neither, get the one you like more now, and the other one later...quite simple actually lol |

If you have a Rolex, buy the Panerai 312. I think it is a fantastic watch, and I am not even a huge Panerai fan. In fact, it is the only PAM I would consider buying at the moment.
If you don't have a Rolex, buy the DSSD--or IMHO--a different Rolex. The Deep Sea is a fantastic watch when you look at it on your wrist. But I wore it for nearly thirty minutes at an A.D. once, considering a purchase, and I found it was simply too disproportionate for me, very thick and top heavy. It gave me the impression that it was wiggling back and forth a lot, no matter how much I tried to accustom myself to it and adjust it (with its REMARKABLE bracelet). Others will disagree. Just my two cents. |
