Price of 2010 era Daydate 36 (118238)

I'm considering a 118238 YG daydate from 2010 (son's birth year) and wondering how I could go about finding out what I should expect to pay for one in very good condition w/ box & papers. I see similar 118238 listed in Chrono24/ebay for $27K-$29K but curious as to what would be a decent/good/fair price?

Thanks.

from 2010 high 20s is a bit too much. i think low 20s is around where you want to be for a good condition (unpolished) example with no stretch, especially with prices coming down now. at 25+ you should be able to find a good condition one from a few years ago, assuming you're looking at non diamond dials

Thanks. Probably better to wait for prices to continue to soften cause all I'm seeing for that era is in the 25+ range

chrono prices are always much higher than actual market prices and even more so today. i think you're better off sending a few emails to some of the trusted sellers here and asking them what they're charging for these. should be a few thousand less than what you see on chrono at least

I recently paid about 20 for a c.2001 118209; more recent models tend to fetch about 5-7k more. If someone's asking high 20s, I'd see about getting them to meet you closer to 25. (You may also want to factor in the cost of a service from RSC. Figure $850ish for a standard movement service; a little more if you're getting any refinishing done; and another $500 if you want them to install a new dial, as I did.)

IMO, this should be a long-game plan. You're looking for something really specific and special: a particular watch from a particular year for a very special reason. I'd set a Google alert (or the like) to keep you posted on new sales-listings and then wait until you find exactly what you want at the right price. Guessing you probably want original papers with the date (since serial number dates are just estimations). It could take a while to get it all just-so.

Maybe consider reaching out to the folks at HQMilton, Tropical Watch, Bob's Watches, Capetown Diamond, Wannabuyawatch, Swisswatchexpo, etc, etc, and also monitoring listings at Hodinkee/Crown & Caliber... And let them know your specific needs (ie the case has to have original factory bevels or nearly so; paperwork, all original links, what dials you'd consider, etc).

I would not worry about the box. Authentic boxes are easily obtained after-the-fact if having one really matters to you, and there's no such thing as an "original" box, since the watches don't come from the Rolex factory with a box. (They come in small plastic "coffin" cases that the dealers retain.) The dealer just grabs a random box from a stockpile in the back. The box doesn't include any identifying serial number or anything that would link it to your particular watch, so even if a seller provides one, you can't confirm it's the one that "came with" with watch.

Thanks for the details on your purchase as that gives me something to compare to. I have found one from one of TRF trusted sellers that checks all the boxes (2010, very good condition, box/papers, all links) but asking price is 27k so too high and can't imagine they'd be willing to go down to low 20s from that point. Like you said, I'm in no rush and perhaps market will soften even more so we'll see...

Mid 20’s sounds about right on current market for a 118238 full set as you want. As pointed above a service (about $800) and a dial swap by RSC (regular dials about $500, exchange basis) can make an ordinary DD in exactly what you want, so focus more on the case / bracelet condition and the paperwork matching the birthyear you want.

Would suggest you to make an offer for the one you mentioned since given the market could perhaps be considered.

Francisco I’m from PR as well although I now live in the states. Saludos!

Well reached out to the Trusted Seller (well-regarded on TRF) and got some additional info, video, and extra pics and it’s in excellent condition plus watch was inspected and and tested by them for accuracy. Has all links, 0 stretch on bracelet, and no polish/dings/etc. They said it’s in mint condition and a rare find to find one of these in such good condition. Box, booklet, warranty card, and hang tag are all included. Also confirmed it’s a 2010 model (important to me as it's our son's birth year and last year with non-random reference #) so after some discussion managed to get it at a much better price (and no sales tax for the bonus!); making it in line with what was suggested on this thread. Should get it Monday/Tuesday. Can't wait!
