Yachtmaster vs Explorer 1
I'm really considering moving my 124270 (current model) Explorer 1 for the platinum dial Yachmaster--not sure if I'd do 116622 or 16622. I'd have to add a little cash.
I also have considered getting an Explorer II 16570 with polar dial, but I think the YM is a more versatile watch. With it, I'd have a 116500LN white dial Daytona and a 5115/8 yellow gold Cellini in my collection. I dress business casual most days, occassionally a suit. I have a Submariner homage from Ginault as my "best" diver now, but the YM would then be my beach/snorkeling watch. I've enjoyed the Explorer 1, but I've grown to find it a little too vanilla most of the time. It does serve a good purpose of "go anywhere, do anything," and it flies under the radar looking fine with anything. However, at this point, I just don't feel the love I had when I first got it. It was purchased at retail, and it doesn't get much wrist time. It's usually the watch I wear when I want to wear a nice watch, but don't want anyone to recognize it (e.g. traveling). Watching prices drop, I think I should take advantage of moving this one before it dips too much lower. The previous 36mm generation I think I'd be fine with, and it trades for even less--should I ever want to buy another Explorer. What would you choose? Keep or trade? |

If you are not wearing it, maybe it’s time to move it. I could not think of parting with mine. So simple, rugged and yet elegant.it’s very versatile and goes with my suits at work and my hoodie and jeans on the weekends. It’s my one watch that stays out of the safety deposit box most.

Five digit Explorer II would be a maybe for me. YM a definite no. The Explorer II is the only watch in the current lineup I’d consider. In fact, I’ve been debating checking in with a few ADs within driving distance and putting myself on The List for one.
For my next watch it’s either that or the IWC Big Pilot 43. The Explorer I is the kind of classic design that works for any occasion short of a black tie event. They did a great job on the new version that is modernized and upgraded without ruining it (unlike everything else they’ve done over the past decade or two). I personally would ditch the Daytona, get your YM (not a fan but still better than a Daytona) - or better yet the five digit Explorer II white dial - and spend the extra cash on a Speedmaster for the chrono in your collection. |

I find the Yacht-Master much more exciting than the Explorer which to me is rather uninspiring. I'm a huge fan of the platinum dial. The YM is on another level of refinement. I've owned my 116622 pt dial for 8 years, so I guess I'm biased . I'd do the trade, no doubt.

It sounds like you’ve already made your mind up, so I would do the trade.
It doesn’t matter what watches others like, but the Yacht-Master and polar Explorer 2 are awesome, as is your current Explorer. And as you said, previous generation Explorers are attainable if you want to go back. |

Sounds like you're over your Explorer, so I would move it.

I have a 39mm, MkI, short hands and WG numerals at 3,6 and 9. It was my third Rolex; had it been my first, it might have been my only Rolex. Very few watches for which I’d trade it.

Ive been in a similar position to you so I know where youre coming from. It's the fact thats it's a very popular Rolex thats probably holding you back. I got rid of my sea dweller for a planet ocean a few years ago and didnt miss it despite everyone saying "DONT DO IT"
I think the YM is a great choice. It's always baffled me as to why its not a very popular watch when the Submariner is so worshipped. It's a dressy sub to my eyes. Get that YM! |

The platinum dial YM is the nicest of all the YMs to me. That's a move I would do. Great watch, versatility and prefer the way it wears. Go for it!

I was in a similar situation.
The YM is gorgeous, probably my fav of what is available, especially considering how comfortable it is (and not so Thicc like some of these). Ultimately though, it was too shiny for me. I tend to prefer understated watches. A beauty of the Exp 1 is how under the radar it is. No one knows I'm wearing a luxury watch - and it is so comfortable. Especially in the winter it fits so easily under a cuff or jacket. The two really project very different images. Certainly the YM is something I don't see very often, and often talk to the person I see wearing it, as I can tell they thought about the watch and went for something a little different... |

I have a Yacht-Master 16622. I simply do not walk out the door without it.

Thanks everyone for their input. I’m leaning towards it. Also consider a current model Speedmaster sapphire, but think I’d be better to try the YM first, as good examples will only become harder to come by over time probably, although the Speedmaster’s MSRP is steadily rising!

My wife bought me a DJ41 126334 white dial with roman numerals from an AD as a Christmas gift. That was my first Rolex. I then traded that watch to the local guy in town for my 16622 and haven't looked back.
It has been about 2 months, and like it's relative monochrome simplicity, it's solid weight and heft from the platinum parts (dial/bezel) and enjoy that it's "rare" enough to be appreciated by those in the know. |
