“Neo-vintage” pricing…
Hi all,
Apologies for creating a thread when I could perhaps search in more detail. I’m wondering what the best way to get a feel for reasonable secondhand pricing would be. Should I be looking to purchase from a trusted seller, or are there better sources from which to buy? I have become interested in getting something with the 31xx series of calibers. Perhaps a 39mm Explorer and/or a 116234 Datejust… Yes, I know there is a diversity of opinions about the 32xx series and I’m hoping to avoid any controversy. Thanks! |

If it is a watch that is discontinued, your only hope of finding it would be through a grey dealer or private transaction (C24, here, etc.)
I would go with a reputable grey dealer. You can negotiate slightly on price, and get exactly what you want with no surprises. |

If it’s anything outside of an AD buy the seller. If you have enough knowledge about the watch you’re after and can do your own due diligence then find a private seller. You may be able to negotiate a little more. It’s a little riskier but will possibly be cheaper than AD or grey, depending on the model of course.
You can find a trusted grey who can communicate easily with you. You have less room to negotiate but you may have “better” guarantee that you’re getting what you paid for. Keep in mind that there is more and more grey dealers that seem to be “trusted”. Just remember at the end of the day these watches are traded products that get passed from hand to hand who knows how many times especially older references. Just because they are trusted dealers they don’t inspect/scrutinize every watch and every detail. |
