Rolex Vs Panerai
Ok Guys,
I need some stats here. Will Panerai hold up it's resale value as Rolex? I have a GMT II now and may want to add a Panerai to my collection. Any advise? Thanks.

In some cases, yes, Pannies do hold their value. But, on an overall basis, Rolex is probably the only watch that has the best resale value. JJ

For the last few years the Rolex resale market has been pretty soft. You can see people taking substantial (imo) losses on watches less than a year old. Rolex is the most recognized luxury watch brand in the world, they produce about a million units a year so if you see one priced for resale, and you think it's too high, you can always move on or wait and find something you want for less. The Panerai market has maintained a healthy ROI over the same time, but you still take a loss if you sell. I don't have numbers to back me up but I'd hazard a guess that with Panerai resellers, the ROI is higher vs. Rolex. BUT, the Panerai market is smaller, much smaller than the Rolex market and they only produce 35,000 units annually, not counting the Ferrari line. I'll repeat the old adage that the only way to make a million dollars in watches is to start with two million dollars. Natually you don't want to lose your shirt if you have to resell, and you won't lose your shirt on either brands, assuming you get a desirable model and you get a decent price. |

Then explain to me how I can spend CDN$5800 on my ExpII and then 6 months later get offered CDN$3000 for it??? ![]() I know for a fact if I went to sell my PAM01B right now I could easily sell it for more than I paid for it. |

IMHO if you want a certain ROI buy a special edition Panerai like a 127, 217, 202 or any T dial Panerai.
But I would never buy a watch thinking about selling it. Buy what you like and keep it!

Thoughts...
If you want to wear an investment strap a stock certificate to your wrist.
I agree with Atomic that watches, irrespective of the brand, do not make good investments. Panerai make great watches. Buy one if you like the look and feel of one. If you don't like it, sell it. You'll lose some money, but at least you then know that Panerai is not for you. Trust me, if you don't go down this route now you'll think about it forever and then eventually buy one when Panerai introduces their next price increase. This is what's happened to me and the blasted SD... |

And then flip it six months later. OR, you could say you're a one brand guy, and then buy an Omega and later a Breitling, flood a couple of forums with pix of it stating how much you love it, only to sell it for a loss some months (or in one case, weeks) later. ![]() ![]() ![]() Nick wasn't saying the SD was a bad watch... but it was obviously a purchase he regretted. I'm sure you've had a few of those yourself. ![]() |

I think their both pretty close. I see a lot of the more common pannies like the 111 and 112 selling for figures closer to the original price then Exp's and GMT's.

One small correction, Johnny: On the Breitling I actually made a small profit. As for the rest, well, the Omega was just an infatuation and Rollies.....well, I can now say that I've had the pleasure of owning each and every damn sports Rolex....except the Daytona.
Hey, what's there to lose (except a few $$$ on the resale)....but think of the IMMENSE pleasure I've given myself on EVERY ROLEX I've ever owned!! ![]()

Right now panerais are a hot watch with a limited production. How long that will last is anybody's guess.
I have both. In the long run I think I will be more satisfied with my rolex. It has an in house movement and a classic style. I never buy a watch with the hopes of selling it. |

Well, I don't own a Panerai..yet, but it seems to me that they hold their value quite well. It's my understanding (and again I defer to the actual owners) that the 44m versions do better.
The only modern Rolex you can do OK on---if bought at list---are, ![]() One you should get your money out of (or pretty close), the other you can make money. |

Clarification...
I referred to the "blasted SD" because I've been obsessing about it for a year, and when I finally decide to take the plunge Rolex increase their price 15% or thereabouts.
I bought it today btw. Should be here next week. It'd better be good or else.... I'll.... huff and I'll puff until.... well, I don't know. Bloody watch. I hate Rolex. ![]() |

If you get a Panerai -
Make sure it's a 44mm. Yes, they do fare better from a resale perspective, but perhaps more importantly, a lot of 40mm Pam owners upgrade sooner or later regretting the 40mm purchase. A 40mm Pam just isn't quite right. I wasn't sure I could pull one off (44mm), but the lugs don't protrude very far from the case so your wrist would have to be absolutely minute for it to "hang over" the sides of your wrist. I'm not usually a fan of big watches, but I love the Pam.
Get one - you'll love it. They're also relatively unusual which I love. |

I have sold a watch or twenty and I have done fine with both. It all ebbs and flows with either brand. At certain times you will see the SD real hot and the prices will be stronger, others it will be cold and the prices will be less. Same goes with Pannies and other brands as well.
I have never gotten hurt selling a PAM, but I also tend to list them at fair market price since it is just to fund the next Panerai I am buying..
