Apollo 8 Astronaut Bill Anders

Sad to say he crashed today and didn't survive it.

Apollo 8 astronaut Bill Anders, who circled the Moon with Frank Borman and Jim Lovell, snapped one of the most iconic images of the space age: Earthwise.

He was flying at the age of 90 off the San Juan Island harbor in his own plane...(stock image by USAF Museum)

Sad loss.

I'm not qualified to have judgement here, but I do wonder, why was a 90yo man flying a plane solo? I get that he's a very experienced pilot, but at that age it does seem like asking for trouble.

I understand Bas, I think if he passed his FAA Medical then he'd be OK.

We'll have to wait to hear some preliminary news. Was it weather, or airframe failure, etc?

Too soon to know what happened. The NTSB investigation will take months. Only then will we have some answers.

Sad day. RIP.

Yes, too soon. Just checked past weather at time of incident and nothing peculiar.

I've had a few friends auger-in, true answers come long afterward.

Yes that's an amazing fact he was born in HK.

I now know how he and some of my friends went in - he was doing acrobatics. A loop went badly and he hit the water.

The video is now on National News here in USA - he was having fun right until the final second.

I’m sure he would rather have it no other way. Rest in peace.

It could be the camera zoom, but it seems a bad decision to be doing that particular aerobatics maneuver at that altitude.

As a former pilot myself, who took pride in my skills, I think he would have preferred not to have died as a result of pilot error. Not the best end for a brilliant aviation story.
