Offered a Cubitus

Hello everyone,

Visited last month my AD to see the new Cubitus. Really liked it, especially the two tone, love the contrast of the blue dial and rose gold. The green dial was too muted, almost grey/black. Today my AD called me to offer a two tone, next one will probably be in March so this is my chance to get an early Christmas present and 40th birthday gift to myself. Did not expect to get it this early tbh as I only purchased a 5167r. What do you Patek expert suggest? It’s a nice chunk of money but it would be my first Patek on bracelet. Thank you in advance for your advice!

Early congratulations!

The bracelet is smooth to the point that if it is properly sized, you almost forget you are wearing a watch.

Two tone is a beauty! I've seen all three IRL, and would buy all three to have part of the collection. Whether to buy or not - well, this is your money and you should make that decision on your own.

As far as Cubitus.... Well it's a new line for Patek that received a lot of strong opinions on it, however majority of people offering online opinions/comments are the ones who haven't actually seen these watches IRL.

Many (not everyone of course) people who actually go and see and try them IRL, end up liking them.

Also, this is a new product line for Patek, and they will have more releases in the future - different sizes, materials, band/straps, and dial layouts/complications will be coming over the years.

Had the choice of green and two tone and got the two tone. Still haven’t seen one and I can’t wait. Will go pick it up early December. Post pics if you get it please.

Agreed... It looks and feels great in the metal. I was quite impressed. Still deciding.. not too large on my 6.6 in wrist

I think the Cubitus is a very polarizing watch at the moment.

But really, you'll be the one wearing it. And popularity (or infamy) of a watch should be wholly subordinate to the simple question: does wearing it make me happy? If it does, buy it. If not, pass.

Agree with this. Personally you couldn’t pay me to wear it. But that’s me. So make a decision based on you. The forum won’t be much help as it comes down to personal taste.

Assuming you don't have unlimited funds you may want to ask yourself if the two tone Cubitus is the best 50k plus/minus watch you can think of at this point.

For me there are tons watches in that price range that I'd add ahead of any Cubitus. On top they look huge on any but the largest wrists. The photo above serves to show exactly that. Not in terms of lug to lug but regarding the overall footprint on the wrist. Much prefer the look of 5711 which I find plenty large already on my flat 6.6 inch wrist.

Let us know what you decide...

The only one I would consider is the 5822P, the rest feels pretty uninspiring to me after trying them.... Oversize case, same coloured dial as the Nautilus are a turn off at this moment..
The 5822P on the other hand, I am absolutely in love with it! The grande date layout is really nice for me as that has always been the highlight of Lange watches. The strap on the 5822P also makes it more wearable size wise, and the heft of platinum + the slightly thicker case of the 5822P makes it more substantial. The wearing experience of the 5822P was a real PP moment, but I cant say the same about the 5821 in TT or SS.

The rest is your judgement.

Congrats! To me these decisions come down to timing and how much you like the offered watch relative to what you already have. You mentioned that you really liked it, but since you didn't just do it and are asking about it here, that seems to me you don't love it. If I'm right about that, for that kind of money I'd pass and wait for something you love.

When it comes to two-tone Pateks I think the 5980AR is the much better looking one.

Looking at your Daytona profile pic and if you usually wear a 5167 I expect the Cubitus to wear way too large for your wrist size.

Thanks everyone for the feedback!

Regarding the size, it fits me nicely. My profile pic has a strange angle. I like the 5980ar but as you know it has been discontinued so the Cubitus is the only two tone sports model in the current catalogue.

Finally, I will write my AD today to get the watch, it goes well with the 5167r and I really liked it irl. Thanks again for the comments and will post pick when I can of course!

Congrats! Lucky you. Will make a nice combo with the gorgeous 5167r

Offered a Cubitus

The Cubitus itself is a new aesthetic among the collections and it will be interesting to watch how it develops over the years.

An Aquanaut-ish "home run" that redefines the name Patek?

Or fades into Ellipse niche?

But the TT Cubitus is possibly the Patek echo of another standard in the horological firmament - the Bluesy of Rolex Sub lore. Although not a diver, it is a TT, blue-dialed, bracelet-clad, wrist monster.

The fact that you're asking TRF what you should do makes me assume that you're trying to make other people convince you of the acquisition "because it's a Patek", not because you really love the watch.

Do you think that about about all watches where people ask for thoughts from existing owners or just because it's a Cubitus he's asking about?

I can't identify the part where he is asking existing owners. He is asking "Patek experts".

I do not like the watch. If I was going PP there would be so many other models that would be in front of this one I would never get around to buying one. Why do you think they offered you one? Because they like you or many others have passed?

I assume you recall how much folks disliked and put down the aquanaut. Wasn't that long ago. It was the watch for those who couldn't get a nautilus. Times and opinions change, as they normally should.

Personally, I have a hard time knowing what I love until I've had it for some time. Many I thought I love, but not after a few months or years. Others I took a gamble and paid off.

I don't see much risk. If you end up not liking it then move on in a couple years. Not seeing you lose money. I have not read all the comments, but if you put the PP name aside, I like the somewhat similar Cartier Santos (some). But hey, that's just me.

I mean my first Patek last year was a 5167r so they must like me a little bit ;) Despite criticism the watch will sell very well so my opinion is that my SA is a nice chap, we get along well and - believe it or not- wanted to offer me a nice watch for my 40th birthday in January. This is a forum so asking questions is/should be pretty normal. Thanks again to those who answered politely;)

Congrats! While not interested myself I think the two tone is the best of the Cubitus.

Personally, I don't like it. Every time someone posts a picture, it looks so oversized: a pizza box on the wrist. They always say it fits well but clearly doesn't look like it. With the lug-to-lug extending over the wrist sometimes! The positive size comments are more like a comment to self-convince ones self to buy it.

+1

Have yet to see an objectively good looking wrist shot of the watch.

The more I think about it the less I like it. Name is poor. Pricing is a pure money-grab. Design is almost a farce of one of the best watch designs. Size almost always looks way too large. Bracelet doesn't seem to gel with the case.

Don't get me wrong - I'd buy one and flip it immediately but I'd never buy one to actually own it (not that I'll ever get offered one anyway). Way better watches for way less money
