Two Rolex malfunctions in under two months
So my wife Andrea wears the lucky 3 Submariner 114060 that I won here on a TRF giveaway and also she wears a 34mm date ( also a model year 2017ish). A few weeks ago, her Submariner stopped … as in dead stop. Winding it did nothing, slight shake nothing, so off to service it goes. On the plus side we got it back in about 3 weeks and it’s been running great ever since. Full Service required. Then, yesterday Andrea says to me “can you set my watch, the date is stuck between numbers”…. Sure enough, the date wont move. The watch is running, it winds well, but I can’t change the date by either advancing the hour hand or using the second position to jump the hour hand Looks like I’m headed to RSC again It’s funny because a couple of years ago I started thinking about the cost of maintenance relative to my collection, and it was at that point I decided to pair back a bit. That wasn’t the only reason, but it was one. Anyway, you folks with large collections (the ones who actually keep your watches beyond warranty) must feel my pain Anyway, just thought I’d share. |

Oh, I've had to have several of my watches serviced...both Rolex and Tudor.
But never two at a time. |

You need to go the opposite way and expand your collection - so you still have a choice of Rolexes to wear should a few go in for service!

I've had a Rolex movement failure every 2 years on average, two being warranty jobs, one requiring a service. At least they are worth repairing, which is a positive. My failures have all been 31 based movements.
Like you Brian, I've also been pondering potential service costs in the medium to long term and reconciling them against my need to own multiple watches. I have paired back a bit but I think there's still some slimming to go. I doubt I'll ever manage to come down to a single digit multi brand collection. |

Sorry to hear Brian. I've yet to experience malfunction with my Rolex pieces. However, I'm prepared to face the bills when the time comes. Money for whisky, money for ice, as they say .

I feel your pain Brian.
My girlfriend’s grand seiko stopped working two weeks ago and my submariner stopped working 3 days ago. It’s been many years since I have had to visit the prince of darkness service center here in nyc.

That's a bummer. When I first joined TRF, I wondered how folks justify insuring and maintaining these 10-20 watch collections. I just can't imagine some of these watches that are supposed to be serviced every few years, and the folks who wear them once or twice a year. But I am guessing most folks with big collections don't get them serviced very often and probably don't insure them.

Sounds like you’ve had a rough streak with Andrea’s watches, but hey, at least the Submariner is back and running strong after service! It’s rare for two malfunctions in such a short time, especially for Rolex, but it does happen. The date issue on the 34mm sounds like a problem with the date-change mechanism, probably nothing catastrophic, but still inconvenient.
Your point about maintenance costs and keeping watches long-term is spot on. For collectors who don’t flip pieces often, factoring in the cost and hassle of service is just part of the game, but it does make you think twice about holding onto too many pieces. It’s especially true for older models or heavily worn watches that might see more wear-and-tear. On the bright side, having a trusted RSC nearby is a lifesaver. It’s good that Rolex service tends to be efficient, even if it’s not cheap. And Andrea’s lucky 3 Sub is clearly a special one, it’s already been battle-tested and back stronger than ever! Hopefully, the 34mm Date gets sorted soon and stays trouble-free. Sometimes these hiccups can feel like a test of patience, but they’re also a reminder that even the most robust watches need TLC every now and then. Watches need regular service like any other mechanism. It is a pain when more than one goes out of whack, but with larger collections it is a regular occurrence that one will need something. Hope they are back soon in good working order.
