External opinion: 5711 vs 5167 + 5170G

Just a thought I had,

If one could get hold of a 5711 only or both a 5167 and 5170g (white dial) for the same price in total. What would you do?

Not talking in terms of resale value as I don’t really flip watches. If I could I’d get all 3 as I like them all but budget doesn’t allow it…

5170G and 5167 would be at msrp or below. While 5711 would be at secondary market prices.

5711 is one of my favorite watches but I would go with 5167 and 5170g. Much better value and more versatility with the duo.

Although I absolutely love the 5711, I would definitely opt for the combination of 5167 and 5170g. If you can make that 5167 a 5167r, you are definitely winner IMHO!

Or better yet a 5764 preferably R or stainless- if you can buy at MSR please don’t hesitate!

5170g is one of my favorite refs, just feel like you're getting way more bang for your buck with the two watch option and more versatility. This is coming from someone who absolutely loves the 5711.

Depends on what else is in your watch box. In a vacuum, I’d probably go with the 5167 and 5170.

Apparently I am voting 5711 with my wallet as I will not trade into 5167 + 5170G.

A decade ago I passed on 5167 and haven't looked back. It felt a little large on my wrist, definitely larger than 5711. Also, 5167 somehow felt like a nice beater to me. And 15k back then felt high for a new beater I didn't really need. 5170G white gets you a lot of bang for the buck but would feel like settling to me as 5170P looks much better in my eyes.

Based on my experience in these situations with watches in general but especially Patek.
Pick your two favorites of the bunch. Buy what you can afford now, save for the other one later.

For me, I’d do 5711 and 5170 here and would rather have these two added over a span of years. If you want all 3, prioritize which one comes first then second then third.

Tough one, I’m not a strap guy and the Nautilus bracelet wears like silk from what I’m told. I think I’d go with the Nautilus.

I prefer either 5167 or 5170 straight up to 5711. This one would be very very easy to me.

Not even contest 5167 and 5170, of course. 5711 is nice but probably one of the most overrated watches in watch history, I see 5711 as a Jumbo follower, the original Genta.

Oh really? I was reading here and there that 5167 was actually wearing the same as a 5711 or even a tad smaller!
For reference my wrist is 6.5’’ and very flat.

Hmmm , well after thinking �� more about it . I have a 5711 white that gets 90 % of my wrist time . I hardly ever wear my 5327 G and my 5164 R once in a while . Guess I would go w the 5711. The thinness is great & the bracelet is soo good ! It’s just pure class- best part is only a connoisseur knows what it is . So based on my experience guess I am changing my vote. A lot depends too on what other pieces you might have and how you would wear it .decisions, decisions ��

Definitely my impression and I have 6.6 inch wrists flat as well. Initially Patek had 5167 and 5711 listed at the same 40mm size but they have upped the reported size for 5167 to 40.8mm w/o changing the watch. The dial on 5167 is bigger too. You can easily see this as the date window is located further from the bezel compared to 5711. Size wise I would have rather gotten a 5165. But like you I own an IWC Mark XV and the vibe was not that different which is why I said 5167 felt like a beater to me.

6.5 was actually my measurement from almost 10 years ago and never bothered checking again.
Checked again just now and I’m actually ~6.7’’ if measured right above ulna bone. Guess age gave me slightly wider wrists!

Although I like the 5711 a lot my choice would still be 5167 + 5170 (maybe R instead of G).
