What do you think about this WG 1803?

Hello,

unfortunately I am not able to post links here, so if anyone could please have a look at the only 1803 on the site of this dealer:

watch-lounge . de

What do you think about its condition?

You can post images here with only a single post. Use the Go Advanced button below, then the paper clip and size images accordingly. Good luck!

Should I buy this watch? It is more than 25,000.- USD

It is rather expensive...

What do you think:
Should I buy it or should I keep on searching for a better one?

Too expensive if my opinion. Even if perfect.

I’m guessing that’s a galvanized/gilt dial? If so, WG gilt DD is quite uncommon. Price is high, but not insanely so.

Probably no one can say “perfect” without examining it in hand, but the condition certainly appears quite good from the few photos.

So the dial is not original?

What exactly has been galvanized/gilt?
The indices and the hands?

The dial. Ask the seller for some raking-light macro photos of the dial text. Afaik, if it is a gilt dial, the text above center will be stamped on top of the black, while the text below center will be visibly “below” the black, with the dial plate showing through the letter-shaped gaps which make up that text. (This detail can be difficult to photograph, or even to see in the hand.)

Also, if you can view it in person, check the condition of the lume plots at 3 & 11, they may be slightly damaged.

Case and bracelet

Thank you very much, miamiclay!

But concerning case and bracelet: Outstanding good condition on the pictures?

Looks to be reserved now. Price is a little strong imo. The condition appears good, i would ask about extra links ? How many if any. Good luck

Yes, this appears to be misssing some bracelet links (3? 4? I don’t recall fight now). Jewelers often strip these to sell separately - You might tell the seller it won’t fit without those links, and therefore the sale is conditioned on the seller adding back another 2 or 3. As Chris noted, it shows as “reserved” - Is that reserved by you, OP?

Also, ask for a horizontally ‘cantilevered’ photo, showing how much “stretch” is in the bracelet. (Lmk if that’s not clear, we can show you examples.) Gilt dials are also known to sometimes get cracks in the finish, which can be difficult to photograph. I would just ask the seller in writing whether they are in any cracks or other damage to the dial.

Lastly, the condition looks quite good, but not utterly pristine. The coronet on the clasp has been polished down some, etc. It’s certainly well better than average for a 52-year-old DD.

President-bracelet question #1

Hello,

could anyone please answer some tricky questions concerning the bracelets of two 1803 in WG?

These two backside-views of WG-President-bracelets show completely different (not only mirrored) clasps.

What's the matter with them?
Have they been produced in different years or is something not original?

President-bracelet question #2

The axle (marked with a red circle on picture 2) seems to "stick".

At least gravity is not enough to move the clasp-limb back into vertical direction...

I had to help with my finger to get the limb's position from picture 1 to picture 2.

Question:
Why?
Is anything damaged?
Or not original?

President-bracelet question #3

The backside of the crown on the clasp:

Why does it look yellow?

It should be made out of 750 WG.
And not just coated by rhodium or anything...

Does anyone know more about this phenomenon?

Did you just start three different threads with different photos to answer multiple questions about the same clasps? If so, that seems extremely counter-productive.

President-bracelet question #4

Similar question to question #3:

What about the yellowish (!) area between the red arrows?

Is it from soldering?
Or from any inproper repair?

President-bracelet question #5

What do you think concerning the stretch of those two bracelets?

Good?
Medium?
Acceptable?
Close to bad?

I'm guessing it's circa mid 70's - mid 80's ? If so that's probably a little less than average stretch, but common for the age.

As far as the gold tone coming through the WG, I have seen others like this one. Threr was a discussion about this a couple years ago, maybe you can search and find it.

Best. Chris

Not great. Is that a fluted bezel? looks flat also. If so, cumulatively I would say the watch is very worn. On vintage day dates, the price difference between poor condition and excellent is not that significant. I'd go for better condition.

Right? I’m guessing he’s trying to notch ten posts to add photos. Would’ve been nice to explain that from the first one.

He could have made multiple posts in the same thread, at least it would have kept the questions together in a more manageable way, since they are obviously connected.
