TRF raffle?

Would the members of TRF be open to the idea of a raffle for charity, with the lucky winner being the proud new owner of a Rolex watch?

I was thinking that a great many of us need to save money for our watch purchases, and this might be a fun way for the TRF community to donate to a good cause and maybe even get a watch out of it.

If tickets, for example, were priced at $15, then 15 * 400= $6000.00, enough for a quality used watch and a donation to charity. I would personally be willing to pay $25, and there might be enough of us to make it worthwhile.

Just an idea...not sure if there are enough active members to support it. Thoughts?

Perhaps you should have posed the question to the mods first. But since it's out there...I'm down!! let's do it. Jonathan

There is a lot more to consider in actual fact.

I see a lot of potential problems with a raffle:
1. Who organises it and who ensures that the proceeds go to charity and which charity who decides that?
2. Who buys the Rolex and how does that person transfer the warranty to the winner.
3. What if there is a problem and no watch is received by the winner?
4. Who accounts for all the proceeds, and who knows what exactly has been received?
5. Who and how is the winner determined and how can that be known to be impartial and fair.
6. Who knows what is profit, or what if there is a shortfall loss.
7. What laws apply regarding lotteries.
8. What if someone figures to buy 1/2 the available tickets and so he/she gets in essence a 50% chance of winning.

People have suggested this in the past, and it has really been used as a way to make a private gain.

These and other factors have only scratched the surface.

I'm sorry but the issues involved and the potential for problems are just more trouble than it is worth.

It's not impossible, but there are significant issues, and one where I would want to have 100% confidence in every aspect of this event.

I would trust Lol-x to administer my $25 if he wanted to. He could limit it to one ticket per verified person. If Lol-x wanted to, simply say it's up to his judgment and leave it at that. Worst case: I've given $25 to Lol-x which is a small price to pay for such a lovely forum!

I agree with the money going to Steve anyway. Why have a charity when the forum is what we are interested in?

I give a lot of money every year to Rotary as I am a Rotarian. I am a Paul Harris Fellow four times over in the last few years. Rotary money gets used all over the world and I don't have to worry about what purpose or cause as it is all in humankind's best interest.

I'm sure everyone here has their favorite charities and causes that they donate money or time to.

The extra money for the lottery should go for maintaining the forum. Just my .02.

You're joking right? Remember how some members got their knickers in a knot when Bubba gave JJ a Sub. Could you imagine what would happen if one of the moderators or someone from "the inner sanctum" won the raffle? I can just picture the 47 pages of posts from disgruntled losers claiming foul.

Best forgotten, in my opinion.

It's all about trust, one of those all too often overlooked virtues. I do however, acknowledge your concerns.

Two months ago, I (in my workplace) was in the opportunity to put up a very nice and professional but superfluous colour laser printer with an extra set of toners for offer to our personnel. All they had to do was to send an e-mail with "I'm interested" as the subject. One of our secretary's performed the draw. And both my colleague and I did not participate to avoid all suspicion of foul play. Because that's how it goes.

Too many potential problems, IMO. An international lottery? We can have the authorities from a dozen countries looking into it. Let's face reality. There are some folks who are not happy with TRF for whatever reason, and would be delighted to blow the whistle.

Seriously though....

Lets make it happen Steve. I think there are some trusty members here if you or one of the Mods don't have time. I will happily buy a ticket....or two.

I say yes sir...My hand is UP!

It would be good, and I'm sure it would be a lot of fun, but some guys like to make trouble and it might just be too much controversy at the end of the day.....

Like how much money did you make, where's that money gone?
Why was he allowed to nominate that charity?
I feel like I got ripped off, I didn't agree to participate with that charity.........
Etc. etc. etc..

Despite my very best efforts and intentions, someone will bring this thing down for some spurious or collateral reason.

But does it include use of the lakehouse??

I mean, it sounds ok, but that could be a deal breaker.

Steve I absolutely see your concern and I appreciate it as much as I can from where I am. That said, I think the forum members and mods could handle the miscreants who might try and besmirch this. I just think it's such a fantastic idea and really think it would be great. Personally, I wouldn't care if all the money earned went to the forum's support, and I bet I'm not alone. We got a little taste of that recently showing just how many people truly love this place.

I know, there is a lot stuff I don't understand, but I think there is more good potential than bad....and for the record, I am more a pessimist than optomist.

Sorry if I am being pushy, I just love the idea.
