Bought a new watch!
I wasn't planning on buying this but I saw it for the first time and I really liked it.....and I really liked the price!
It's a Glycine Incursore ARCO ref 3849 44mm s/s polished case, dark brown linen dial, big super-luminova numerals, sweep second hand, tan strap. Glycine has been making watches in Switzerland since 1914 and is one of the oldest manufacturers of automatic watches. I'm very happy with the watch - it's simple, easy-to-read, and was pretty inexpensive (compared to the more famous brands). It even comes in a wooden box and I managed to get a spare strap thrown in! Here are some pics.... |

Wow, that reminds of something... but I cant quite put my finger on it.
VERY nice score, Shane! Congrats and enjoy. Glycine makes a great watch, particularly considering the price. That dial looks too cool, with the linen look to it. Very nice! BTW, how wide a strap does it take. |

Thanks John! Yes - the 3,6,9 reminded me of the Historics and I always love that configuration (loved my Explorer for same reason!).
I did look at getting back into Panerai but it was hard for me after a break of nearly 2 years and remembering what I had. I ideally wanted something a fraction of the price of a Panerai but which I still liked the look of. It takes a 22mm strap - it looks like a 24mm lug width but isn't! I will keep the tan Glycine strap on it as it's quite nice! |

Very nice indeed. I always thought that Chronmeters are only for high end watches, but like you've pointed out earlier, they're more of a marketing tool.

The truth being most of todays movements, Chinese, Japanese, Swiss or European, with a bit of fine tuning can match the Swiss COSC.The difference being, your Chronometer is built to be a chronometer. While the others have to be made to run like a chronometer. Now the likes of ETA make about on average about 5 grades of movements, for say they main high selling movements like the 2824-2 for instance the top is chronometer grade. But with a bit of tuning even the bottom grade can perform to the COSC standards. In reality now its just a bit of paper, that certifies that movement. And the test costs around £140 which is passed on in price of watch, its just a marketing ploy now IMO.

Thanks everyone!
It is possible to get some really nice watches for well under $1000 (nearer to $500 actually). Makes a nice change and leaves your wallet much happier too! |
