TRF rule #5 question
i noticed another thread was locked due to a violation of TRF rule #5 (copied below). can i just ask, what's the concern about discussing fake watches, etc.? is it b/c of how it might make the forum appear to outsiders? or, might the concern be that tips re: fakes might fall in the wrong hands? or, might it be that discussions re: fakes usually end up getting negative? something else?
just a question....if this is an inappropriate subject matter, i apologize and mods please delete....not trying to ruffle any feathers! especially being new around here..... TRF rules 5 5. THIS IS NOT A FORUM FOR THE DISCUSSION OF FAKE WATCHES, BRACELETS ETC, and your opinion about FAKE WATCHES and who makes them, sells them, buys them and wears them is NOT welcome. |

I'm sure the Mods can give a full explanation, but I believe the general jist is that plenty of other sites deal with fakes, but TRF likes to deal with the real thing. It can also cause some pretty heated discussions, which inevitably leads to hostility, and that's the last thing we want

There are at least 2 good reasons......
1. This is a Forum about Rolex; not fakes. We go into depth and detail about the authentic product and enjoy discussions pertaining to Rolex and it's models... Education about an authentic Rolex is valuable knowledge. If you know what a Rolex is, you will then know what a Rolex isn't, and you never have to try to remember that a fake has or doesn't have such-and-such. If you want to know about fakes...there are other Forums dedicted to those.. 2. Discussions about fakes always degrades into a shouting match and hate-fest, then direct attack or assault on individuals whos opinions differ..... We almost always end up banning somebody when such discussions become hostile..

No one is beyond the law and unbannable. I know my limitations and I think the Mods know that too!!!

Bill,
I'm the one that closed the thread. As stated TRF is a forum to discuss and learn about all things Rolex. Aside from the legalities of fakes, the discussion of fake pieces can't do any good for the forum. As Larry stated there are other places for that. More importantly I can't help but consider those that have sweat blood and studied hard to assemble a collection of pieces (whether large or small) that they feel justifiably proud of. To allow the blatent discussion of fake pieces seems like a slap in the face to them. (Perhaps even more so for the guy that worked his tosh off to afford that one special watch that's his "crown for every achievement".) That's not to say we can't ask/answer questions about a particular watch/reference. Such is how we all learn. However, to "elevate" any fake to a discussion akin to the real deal is something that cannot stand. |

fantastic points, thanks. i like and appreciate that there is a concerted effort to keep the positive vibes going on the board (with a light enough hand to allow some good natured jokes, too). i can definitely see how not having a rule like rule #5 could bring some people down when they'd see such threads on the board. |

Everyone gets treated the same on TRF friend or foe, break the rules or cross the line of decorum, then is possible they will be shown the door.

Sound philosophy. Thanks to TRF for settin up the orange cones to warn when there are curves ahead and yellow tape around the crime scenes involving counterfeits and dishonest transactions. I hope the donation methods get resolved soon so I can pledge.
