Need Advice: SERVICED ROLEX EXPLORE 14270

Hi. I just joined today. Looking into getting my very first Rolex. Need your help as I don't understand some watch terminologies.

OVER HAUL AND POLISH SERVICED BY HONGKONG ROLEX ON 2010 FEB.
VERY GOOD CONDITION.
13 FULL LINKS
AROUND 5 SECONDS GAIN/PER DAY
MANUFACTURED ON 1996 SERIAL NO. T881366

The guy is selling this for HKD17K.

What does 13 FULL LINKS mean? How about the 'around 5 sec gain/day?' ?

Is HKD17K a good price. That's around USD2,200.

It means there are 13 links in the band and that watch gains 5 seconds of time per day, or it runs fast by 5 seconds per 24 hours.

I believe I'm right in saying that 13 links is as per supplied by Rolex (although I'll be corrected if I'm wrong).

+5 seconds per day is within COSC specification (which is -4 to +6 seconds) and whilst I'd expect greater accuracy for a watch serviced 4 months ago it still represents 99.994% accuracy against a reference.

T is the correct serial prefix for a '96 watch, incidentally.

The COSC spec is a average of -4 to +6 seconds over a 24 hour period.

and how do u verify a legitimacy of a Rolex watch? as you know, Hong Kong, being part of China is the rip-off capital of the world. Sometimes, if you will not look closely, those watches in Mongkok, truly resembles the orig ones.

Welcome to TRF.

The best way to validated authenticity is by meeting the seller at an AD and have it looked over by an experienced watchmaker. The watchmaker will open up the watch and look at movement. The Rolex service paperwork is a good indicator that the watch is legit.

Asking for references from the seller and taking the time to verify the references is also a good indicator of the seller's reputation. The seller's willingness to provide references and meet at an AD are also good indicators.

If you have the Rolex service papers and the serial number matches those between the lugs on bought watch then all should be fine.But if you took it to a AD most would charge a fee,and thats if they have a in-house watchmaker to take back off to check movement.

Just to add what to what has already been said, if you're in HK and the watch was serviced in HK in Feb. of this year why not check with them?
