16800 Matte Dial Serial Numbers

Hi Folks,

What's the highest approximate serial number typically associated with matte dialed 16800 Subs? The consensus seems to be that the glossy dial and white gold surrounds showed up mid year in 1985. The highest I've seen in limited research is approximately 8.6m. Thanks.

1985 is what most collectors use as the cutoff, or the high 8 million serial. Personally, I like 8.6 million or below to avoid dispute. FWIW, there have been 168000's that have shown up with Matte dials as well, but they are often disputed. To me, the matte 16800 is the perfect transitional!

Thanks for the reply...I've got my eyes on a matte dial 16800 from 1985. I'm going to see it in a few days and will look at the serial then, so thanks for the help.

Anything stand out to anyone about this 16800? It is the best picture I have so far. Really appreciate your comments.

One additional picture. I know it is rather dark, but it is all I have. Any comments from the matte 16800 experts out there? Thanks again.

If you can find one with the matte dial and the numbers are even close, I would be sorely tempted...

The service replacement was frequently the surround dials and so very few matte 16800's survive.. Even if the matte was a service replacement to an original surround dial, it would be very hard to prove one way or the other.

Good info, thanks. The pictures above are of the actual watch that I am tempted by...it clearly has no surrounds, and even though it is tough to tell for certain from the dark pictures, it sure looks like a matte. The price is very tempting, however, it is missing its box and papers (it has recent service records and is at a dealer, so authenticity isn't an issue)...I just want to make sure it has the correct dial...if not, I'll keep looking.

I'm in a tough debate between the 16800 above and a D serial Sub LV. Prices are roughly the same.

Boy, I wish the photo was better and the hands were in a different position, but I don't see anything that jumps at me.

He's mine for comparison. Bit earlier with a 7 mil number
