I grew up in Massachusetts, but I haven't been back in about 20 years. So I'm planning to go back and visit this October. Boston is one of the places that we will be visiting besides my old hometown of Holyoke.

For those who live in the area, what would you recommend seeing? Also, I would like to see the leaves change colors since that's not something I really get to see in Dallas. Should I visit the first, second or last week in October? I'm on-call the 3rd week so that isn't an option.

Hi Vu,
I just did the Boston Marathon last April and spent some time playing tourist. A great City. I loved it. Definitely walk the Freedom Trail. I really enjoyed the history and the buildings as you follow the red bricks of the trail through the City.
The Duck tour was okay to.

For Boston and the coastal areas of MA, 2nd & 3rd week in October are peak for fall foliage. This is, of course, subject to weather around that time.

I travel to Boston 2-3x's a month but I wouldn't consider myself an expert for recommendations. You will have much better views of the colors on the north shore or if you go further west into the mountains. If you're staying in Boston, try VX Beacon. My company is too cheap to pay for it so I usually stay at the Intercontinental.

I recommend the October 6-17, I've been in Massachusetts and New England for
ages and those are the days for fall foliage!

I bought my tickets for the second week in October. The question is will I have enough time to hit the Cape, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket as well.

Those are definitely great places to visit. Also, maybe hit up NH for fall foliage and tax free shopping haha!! Have fun!!

I fly out to Boston tomorrow and I've been reading up on the weather and fall foliage. So far, the foliage aspect sounds a little disappointing due to the dry summer. I don't know how much I will really see since I'll be spending a good chunk of time around Boston and Cape Cod.

Does anyone have a recommendation for lobster on the cheap in Boston or Cape Cod? I need something to balance out the expensive dinners at Legal Seafood.

"Cheap lobster" in Boston is kind of an oxymoron but you can check out the Barking Crab if you want seafood in a less formal atmosphere.

Since you haven't been in Boston in 20 years a duck boat tour of the city might not be a bad idea, they leave both from the Prudential Center or from the Museum of Science and last a couple of hours.

You'll find a lot has changed in Boston over the last 20 years, the areas right around North and South Stations are good examples.

My one suggestion would be to have dinner at Troquet...really good food, very nice wine list.

Make a reservation.
