I don't see much in terms of redesigning the DSSD. In the case of that watch, I think that form really does follow function.
In terms of the Submariner Date, I don't see that the beefed up case has done anything for the watch functionally and the change appears to be purely cosmetic. The watch lines will continue to evolve as they always have, but what forms that evolution will bring about is questionable. I don't see the boxy look of the Sub Date or the GMTIIc really holding out that long before things begin to smooth out some either by widening the bracelet or by scaling the case back some. If you watch car designs, there seems to be two major trends: sculpted and contoured. Cars always seem to reach an extreme of one or the other and then gradually phase back toward the other. Watches I think are getting close to the size extreme and eventually the more trendy watches will start getting smaller and Rolex will follow, although they seem to have all bases covered in the DJ department. The DJ case is bulkier than in the past but not so much as to be grotesque. In fact, as much as I like the smaller lugged vintage DJs, I really think the current model is very nearly perfect with its polished lugs and the domed bezel (the fluted bezel will never go out of style) which lend themselves to some interesting light play, especially with the Jubilee bracelet. I can't say that I'm all that impressed with the polished center links of the Oyster bracelet, although it is not ugly by any stretch. The DJII meets the demands of the market for a larger dressy watch, but it could be discontinued without too much stress if the trends go as I expect them to. I expect that the Explorer will remain at 39mm for a very long time. That's a very good size for a watch. The only change I anticipate in the not too distant future is hands that extend a little closer to the chapter ring. The tiny hands of the new Explorer simply baffle me.

Has anyone in business acheived their ultimate goal? If so maybe they should start another business.

Mmmmmmmmmmmm, I'd love to see them experiment with moonphases, power reserves, and alarms.

Like any other businesses, first maximize organic growth by introducing new breakthroughs. If this is exhausted or limited, go for acquisition. Why not?

In a word, no. Rolex has the luxury of going back in time to bring back classics. Also listen to your Rolex. The sound of Rolex is an option they might pursue in the form of repeaters or sonneries while staying true to their heritage. Also they have the option of going towards complicated movements that have quadruple tourbillion. Who knows. The options are intriguing to say the least. But more importantly the will stay true to their tradition like Ferrari. Many more models to come but still a Rolex!

I like the improments they have made in regards to bracelets and clasp, however they could work on their Lume just a bit.

I think Rolex have set themselves up nicely for the next 10-15 years. They've transformed the range from a classic but ageing selection of models, to an expanded, modern, and high-tech selection. Rolex have beefed up their reputation as a market leader, and they've got watches that stand out again, which is definitely a good thing.
The next step to take, in my opinion, would be a replacement for the venerable cal. 3135. I know Rolex have filed patents for some pretty interesting movement parts, I look forward to seeing them implemented in a new movement |
