some good advice/help for tyler
Dear tyler
its good to see you wanting to own your first rollie, a sub, which i is the classic and best choice IMHO. i have seen your posts and they remind me of my posts 2 years ago on another forum. I will give you my example: i wanted a rolex, but didnt know which one. i had just graduated from university and was 23 years old (im 25 now). I had spent a lot of money on seiko, citizen, the usual ... In fact i thought getting a rollie was impossible so i aimed for just a basic oyster or DJ. in my heart i wanted a sub but it was so much more. Then i met JJ and he advised me to just hold out and not buy anything until i saved up that bit more cash for the sub, and JJ called the AD in my town and told them i was a serious buyer instead of just another guy in a suit drooling at their display window. This prompted the AD Mansors to pay me more attention and give a significant discount, i got a band new sub for 25% off the MSRP. i was also offered the same for the Seadweller, all i had to do was decide which one. Again i was helped out, JJ told me that being my first rolex watch at the age of 23 the sub would be the best bet as it would be while before i could afford another serious watch on a graduate salary. That was good advice, now that i am working, the extra cah goes to car, food, clothes, movies, girlfriend, healthcare etc. So i will pass the same advice to you. I was in your age group wanting the same watch in the same situation. I didnt have prior money to rely on so i had to save every cent for the sub. Even putting aside that extra $50 or $20 will add up to $100.00 and slowly you will have your sub. There were times when i almost caved in and bought a breitling superocean thats how bad the 'cravings' got. Sometimes i look at my wrist when i have a hard day and it brings a smile to my face i think of how fortunate i am to have a great watch that i wanted for a long time. My next watch will be next year hopefully when i turn 26, im thinking iwc aquatimer, a very basic ss JLC , panerai base or a seadweller. Thats part of the fun. the good thing is even if i cant have one of these 'other' watches next year its ok because i have my sub which i love. im sure you will soon have the sub. its just natural progression, dont worry..you will get the panerai and the ttsub etc all in good time. take care don |

hear hear, I wish I had taken that advice years ago, coz over the years, instead of saving the cash I spent a lot of money buying branded look alikes, trying to convince myself it was only the style I was interested in. If I had held off as suggested here, I would of had my watch a long time ago. But hey hopefully someone can learn from my mistakes as indeed I did. Swallow hard, put the money away and buy what you really desire coz otherwise the watch monster will consume you with alternatives that won;t fit the bill

Great advice, Don. You could have settled for second best, but you stuck to your guns and held out for what you really wanted. Feels good, doesn't it.
Tyler, heed the advice of your "elders", even if they're not that far ahead of you. You've already got a good start on your Sub fund. Just keep adding to it a little bit at a time. Set yourself a goal as to when you want to get it, and put enough away each month so that you can reach that goal comfortably. Good luck. It will all be worth it when you reach that goal.
