Disaster Wrist Check

Made sure the trip-lock crown was screwed down, and my pressure test is still valid.

There are 80 brand new Lexus cars under that, several of which are under the shipping container.

While I was taking some wrist shots over the floodwaters in west Brisbane, another gentleman with a Rotarian shirt comes up behind me and asks if its a 1680, before showing me his rather nice great white 1665. Funny the people you meet in a catastrophe.

I sincerely hope all is Ok for you. I'm from Brisbane originally and remember the 1974 floods only too well. Fortunately family and friends all live in higher areas, and I hope it's likewise for you.

We're completely fine man, secured the cars yesterday, enough food, water, coke, and grog to last a month, air conditioning and electricity, far up on one of the highest hills.

Making an emergency fuel run out to a friend tonight that's got no power, and running bilge pumps off generators to keep the house dry. Tomorrow it will have peaked and I'll get some more pictures then of the extent of the damage. That Lexus dealer though has likely lost 100-150 cars depending on how high it gets, and 15k-25k people are going to have their homes flooded.

Feels rather bad to be this comfortable up on the high ground while 125,000 homes are without power and people are dying, but the thing is there's no point in trying to be a hero in something like this when you're more likely to cause more harm than good, and the best thing we can do is stay out of the mess and not get in the emergency service's way.

Have to say, the scale of this is probably of a level not seen since Katrina, but the difference, particularly in the low loss of life is the organization, planning and mobilization of emergency efforts. While in Katrina the response was seen as inadequate, the job that is being done here is nothing short of amazing, police, SES, fire, ambulance and military were on the job ahead of the floods, and are doing everything possible to save lives.

As far as property and damage goes... nothing can be done to stop that, but its just time and money.

It will be in time mate, like I said, the important thing is to limit the loss of life, everything else can be rebuilt. Probably the biggest thing you guys can do to help is to consider dropping by next Christmas or summer vacation, by then Queensland will be back better than ever, and it really is one of the nicest places to visit when it isn't underwater. The businesses all over the state depend greatly on our tourism industry so after the cleanup, we'll be appreciating every holiday maker more than ever

Don't buy the hype, it has nothing to do with global warming, but more to do with changing weather patterns and solar activity, which is the major determinant factor in our weather. There has actually been a COOLING trend in the past few years and there is likely to be global cooling in the next 20 years, not warming.
Not to say that I am not all for reducing fossil fuel usage and carbon footprints...just let's not drink the Kool Aid too soon for the wrong reasons.

I considered asking for a side-by-side shot, but as he already saw me taking photographs of my own watch with an overturned shipping containiner in the background, he sort of already thought I was a strange person as it is, and I didn't want to push it ;)

As we were talking another guy actually came by with a rather nice PO too, but the flood was the first time I've even MET any of the people on my street other than immediate neighbours.

I feel a bit guilty here as well. Only an hour or so away from the insanity, sitting in an airconditioned boat as comfy as ever. Beautiful sunny day today too (for once!)

Earlier, I had a few emails to a client that kept bouncing back. I then realised they were in the West End, and had been evacuated/their electricity-cut.

Please send some of that "global warming" here. I'm tired of shoveling snow and heavy coats. Our worst flood in this area was in 1965, I wonder if "global warming" caused it. In the 1970's there was an article in Time Magazine about the coming next ice age. ---- Have been following the news and wishing the best for those unfortunate people.

Very true! I'm all for keeping the planet clean but it has nothing to do with the changing weather. If you look back in history, there is evidence of similar changes to weather systems every few thousand years... I'm pretty sure dinosaurs didn't drive 4x4's...

Not exactly a wonderfull year down our way. Fairly big eq in christchurch, 30 guys killed at Pike River and now floods over the ditch. I'm in Wellington so guess we'll be next with a huge earthquake!

How old is that watch and how long have you owned it??
