Can a AD for 100% tell that a Rolex is authentic?
Hey,
This is my first post here! :) I am about to buy my first Rolex. I have found a Rolex GMT Master II from 2005 with the Pepsi ring that I have looked for some time now. As you guys probably know this is not produced anymore, "forcing" me to buy it second hand. The thing is that I don't wanna end up with a fake Rolex on my arm, paying full market price. So therefore I met the seller at an AD and we left the watch there for them to verify that it is the real thing (the seller didnt mind, which is comforting). It is currently there as I write this being examined by their experts. Since it is quite a big decision for me buying this watch, I have been reading alot online. And of course the "bad" knock offs are easy to spot. But the BEST ones seems to be quite hard to expose. I definently wouldn't be able to tell the difference. So my question is: Will the AD be able to tell 100 % if the watch I am about to buy is authentic? (of course they will open the watch up) Are there any "fakes" that are so good that they can fool the AD's? (The watch is supposedly sold at the very same AD that now do the examining and has the original certificate that is stamped from that store, and all the other stuff (boxes, bezels, pricetag etc)) Please enlighten me! |

There have been stories that some AD's were fooled by fakes . The DSSD story was one of them . I believe we are talking sales staff being fooled and maybe the AD did not invest enough time in checking properly . As a whole I would think you have more chance to be struck by lighting then a Rolex AD validating a fake for authentic .

9999 out 0f 10000 yes they would be able, especially if they open the watch up and you are not just getting the opinion of sales peopel who too often for my liking dont know much at all.

Thanks alot guys!
Yeah, I am paying the AD for the examination of the watch, so they will open it up and study everything. Not the sales staff but the "backoffice" guys. So that puts me in the safe zone you say? What would give the BEST copies away? |

There is no such thing as best copies they are as fake as any other copy fake. But the best way to authenticate any Rolex is get the back off to check movement. Up till now thats one thing they have not been able to fake properly.

You stated the AD is taking the back off to inspect the movement. With that said you can be assured the assesment will be correct.

Yes, they should be able to tell. Even with the best fake.

It means removing the caseback to make sure it has a Rolex movement.

Most AD's sadly can NOT tell if vintage Rolexes are genuine. Most modern Rolex fakes of modern Rolexes can "usually" be determined by AD's.
Good luck! Jeff |

you guys are a hoot. On Katrinas thing, I have little to say. On this issue I have a lot to say. Rolex has made it clear that vintage is not their priority. Their business is selling new watches. Most of their AD's are well trained in modern watches. People who work on Rolex are WELL trained and Rolex insists on it. Most ROlex AD's are EXPERTS on modern watches and can tell a modern fake from a mile away. But when it comes to vintage, most AD's are a bit lacking. Often, I spend half my day fielding questions from AD's about vintage trade-ins and such. Cheers! Jeff BTW, I agree wtih TOPH in that 9999 out of 10000 AD's can discern fakes...modern ones that is. And, MonBk, thanks for the nod! |

Can a AD for 100% tell that a Rolex is authentic?
Hey,
AD's "should" be able to say if the piece is a fake one, specially if you ask them during a service (maintainance)==> they open the caseback ... nevertheless, in most of the AD's they will tell you that in order to be 1000% sure they will need to send it back to Rolex to get the certification... specially if we are talking as well about bracelets.... actually it happenned to me this week end , had some doubts about a band i just got from internet... ... went to a couple of AD's and they all told me the same... (I'm in Europe though...) cya Quote:

If, as the OP said, he took it back to the AD who sold it originally, it would be nearly a sure thing since the AD can verify the S/N with their records. It's VERY unlikely that even a perfect fake would happen to have the exact serial number.
I worried about authenticity for a while, then concluded that if I had the one in a million fake that was so exact that the AD was fooled, no one else would ever know either, so I stopped worrying about it and enjoyed the watch. |

100% guarantee is to take it to rolex themselves only costs about 100 dollars in australia and you get a nice certificate, the watch is ready overnight
