Question about "gold tone"

How durable is it? I'm thinking about getting a "nice" reatively cheap beater watch. Does it wear off readily?
I like this one:

"Gold tone" means it's stainless steel that is colored to look like yellow gold. There is absolutely no gold content, and it does not wear off, as it is part of the metal.

Nope

It actually looks like gold, and keeps looking that way even if scratched or even gouged. It isn't a surface plating, it's the actual color of the metal.

Really? I though it was a base metal with a gold coloring (no real gold, I know) splashed on it. I've had gold tone watches as a kid which definitely wore off with usage and the coloring was not endemic to the metal itself.

To be honest, I'd like to see a picture of the REAL watch, and not some photo-shopped rendition...

I had a Seiko for 20 years that was beat to sh*t and the metal was just as "gold" as the day I bought it.

I don't think there is any process for coloring steel to be gold colored, except some kind of surface coating. To me, gold toned is just another way to describe gold plating, gold capped, or gold filled. It is possible to do a pretty heavy plating job that can hold up to years of wear. Gold capped means a mechanical stamping kind of thing where the steel case is stamped with a sheet of gold (pretty thick compared to plating), I think.
