GMT choices driving me crazy
Hi guys,
First post here, glad to have found the forum. Was hoping to get some input from you veterans on pros and cons of different GMT options. I basically have 3 things tugging at me, each of which would seemingly entail a different selection: 1) I was born in 1974 and would like a watch to keep forever from my birth year. This would result in a 1675. 2) In general, when I plan to keep things "forever" I prefer to buy them new so I don't have to stress over any unknown parts of their history. This would put me into a 116710. 3) Visually, my favorite GMT by far is the Coke bezel, but from what I can see neither the 1675 nor the 116710 came in this configuration. So that would put me into a 16710 (might as well go as new as possible if I'm not going all the way back to my birth year). So firstly, are my assumptions about the models and options correct? And secondly, are there non-obvious things (to a newb at least) to consider with one of these models versus the other (e.g. reliability, service costs, parts availabilty, etc.). Again, all asked from the pespective a watch that I would plan to have for the next 50 years. Thanks! Jeff |

You can go with the 16760 or 16710, both GMT II's, or the 16700 GMT. Most of the 16700's came with a black dial but some came with the multi-colored dials. The 16700 has a true quick-set date with two time zones. The GMT II's have three time zones and the hour hand must be wound to change the date - best described as a semi quick-set date. All have sapphire crystals. The GMT II 16760 was produced from around 1983 to 1988, and the 16700 replaced the GMT 16750 and was produced from around 1988 to 1999. The GMT II 16710 replaced the 16760 and was produced from around 1988/89 until around 2010.
Good luck in your choice.

Jeff I'd go for a pre ceramic bezel...if you do that you really get 3 watches in one!If you get the urge you can simply change the bezel,,,Pepsi(blue & red)Coke(red & black) and just solid black!!Just sayin!

Whilst I have a GMTIIc and love it, I think I would now buy the last Pre-ceremic and buy a Coke, but then I prefer the taste of Coke to Pepsi anyway

If its regular, I prefer coke. If its diet, I prefer Pepsi. If its a watch, I prefer the ceramic version. Whilst I like them all, I like the larger case and maxi dial. I also far prefer the look of the ceramic bezel. Just one mans opinion.

According to this: http://www.gmtmasterhistory.com/gmt-..._timeline.html the 16710 is the last pre-ceramic version.
Am I correct that the ceramic model is black bezel only? And if so, do we expect that to change at some point? |

Read the third post here, it gives a chronology for about the last 30 years of GMT's. The last GMT II was the 16710 before ceramic.

If you look hard, you might be able to find a 16710 with the 3186 movement. You get the newer movement in a classic interchangeable look. I enjoy coke as well. The beverage and watch only. Good luck deciding.

Go with a Fat Lady...16760. Coke bezel and older, thicker case. A beauty.
