Rolex has over 300 ADs in Hong Kong.
They sell about twice as many Rolex in HK as the entire US.
What's to 'get into' ?

And, I don't think you friend got it right.

Ubiquitous Rolex

I was in HK last month for the 7s. I was blown away by the presence of watch boutiques & I live in Geneva!
HK is now one big luxury show room for the mainland Chinese. Go to Elements mall in the IFC--you will be blown away.
I vote you wear the Panerai. Rolex watches (many fake) are everywhere. I wore my SS Daytona & I kept wondering if people thought I had picked it up in the market.....

Have a great time in HK. It's a great place.

The two most common watch brands in HK: Rolex, & Casio G-Shock.

Based on observation!

None of the above.

Buy a DSSD on your first day in HK and sport that around instead.

Where is the best place in the world to buy a Rolex, I currently live in London and the current price of the model 116231 is £6650?

Wearing an inexpensive timepiece in HK gives you freedom and anonymity. No penniless recent immigrant will be tempted to chop your arm off for a Casio. Save the recognizable brand-name watch for wear in the high-end places. HK is not the wild west, but just like NYC, it's easy to wander into a sketchy area if you are not a local.

Sorry, but its absolutely luidcrous to compare Hong Kong to New York.
HK is one of the safest large cities in the world.
I wear my Rolex everywhere - comfortably.

Here's a few stats New York 2010 (Hong Kong 2011)

Population - 19,378,102 (7,100,000) NY almost 3X HK
Violent crime - 75,977 (13,100)
Murders - 866 (17)
Rape - 2,771 (91)
Robbery - 28,473 (731 - Robberies with guns 0)
Agg. assault - 43,867 (6,900)
Theft/larceny - 290,755 (35,026)
Vehicle theft - 20,433 (869)

Nope, most Chinese would think whatever cost more is better.
