Red Ranger Help
This is my first post so hello. I recently bought this watch and have some grave concerns re it's authenticity. I have another Tudor from the 50s and a '67 Air King. This is the latest addition to my modest collection and wanted to get some opinions on it. I bought it on ebay having done some research, but it feels too 'new' to me. I suppose it could be masiively polished but I'm also unsure of the movement. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks folks. Ross, Cheshire UK

It looks like a mighty fine Tudor to me!
If you are concerned about its authenticity, maybe you can get a watchmaker to open the movement and verify the model numbers that are engraved inside the movement. Tudor watches can be traced back to when they were produced by a internal date marking the in movement. You need to remove the caseback to see it. Example: (IV/74) The watch was produced in the fourth quarter of 1974. You can possibly verify that number to confirm its authenticity.

Mmmm
The watch was described as 50's. The dial looks brand new. Could it be a refinish and are the hands correct?

Red Ranger or Red Herring?
Go to "Timebroker"'s Tudor Ref. links and try the star.ap.teacup link. It is in Chinese, but the later pages (6-11) show many Rangers marked with the Tudor Rose and the Shield. They appear to be unaltered. NONE of them have Ranger in red. I have a couple of Tudor Rangers and they have Ranger in white and my AD verified them as original. I have read (somewhere) and been told that the "Red Rangers" are frequently random Tudors and low end Rolexes with refinished dials and Ranger hands added. Mostly I see them from HK on ebay, sometimes elsewhere in Asia. I have been told that if red makes a SD more desireable, why not do the Ranger in red? However, I am no expert and would like to hear from some one what is the truth about the "Red Ranger." Has anyone owned one from, say the '70's?

Thanks. I bought the DRSD at Bucherer's in '78, got a couple for birthday/ anniversary gifts. The rest are fairly recent aquisitions. My Dad passed away a couple of years ago and let me a little money which is totally reflected in the list (I blew it all!) The irony is Dad always said that he could buy enough Timexes for the next 3 generations for what a Rolex costs. I personally think the next 3 generations will like my idea better!

I appreciate it. I'll have some pics of the Root Beer up on the other thread, hopefully, day after tommorrow. I'm going to try to borrow a camera that cost more than $49 at Radio Shack. My avatar is the fruit of a solid hour's work. You can't tell but it is my DRSD, EXP II orange hand, LV and GMT II C.

Hello Ross
Well, I am no expert on Tudors, but the one you posted just doesn't look right. Dial is too clean. BTW, I remember reading recently (I can't remember where) by some pretty experienced collectors that there were NO red Rangers ever made. This means that they are ALL fakes or redone. Again, don't punish me, I just remember what I read. John. |

This is all very helpful, thank you. There seem to be a lot of these on UK ebay at the moment. I'm now even beginning to doubt the authenticity of the movement. This movement only appears on the ebay Rangers, not anywhere else

Thanks Mike. Here is the discussion I was referring about: http://forums.timezone.com/index.php...53#msg_3019745 At the very least the caseback engravings (inside and out) as well as the rotor engravings and movement look wrong. John. |

This thread for selling one claims it was verified by RSC Toronto as being authentic, picture of paper shown.

Man, that watch is a POS. That caseback is FAKE. I can't believe Rolex Toronto authenticated that. They didn't confirn that it was a Red Ranger, merely a Ranger. Also, the bracelet was fake......hmmmmm. And this classic statement: "This is an extremely rare authenticated Tudor in almost NOS condition, and I am charging a commensurate price. REDUCED TO $2500, not including shipping and PayPal fees." OMG, these watches, if they do exist (I'm not sure) would NOT need to be reduced, especially to $2,500. Especially with RSC authenticity, it would be worth $50k+. I really don't know what the truth is regarding these watches, but that one is no good. John. |

Numbers
I have now taken the strap off the reveal the following numbers between the lugs. Betwen the top lugs the number 7964 and between the bottom lugs 732451. I can't reaaly make out the numbers on the movent, but I think it's either 4276 or 6276. However, the bezel came loose and shows signs of glueing. This does not bode well. How are the bezels usually fixed?
