Am I crazy?

Hi. I received my beautiful SD in the mail today and I have a small problem I would like to ask you about. It starts when I got my 16610 Submariner in the mail a few weeks ago. I noticed after wearing it for about 15 minutes that there was a very small scratch in the black dial that could be seen under certain lighting conditions. The seller was very understanding and took the watch back even though he could not see the scratch. Now I received my sea dweller today and under the same bright lighting as before I am able to see a similar scratch in the glossy dial, except that this one is worse than the one I sent back! I contacted the seller and he says that he has owned the watch for a while and never noticed a thing. So am I crazy? Is this a common thing that all these glossy black dials have and I should get over it? I mean what are the chances I get two in a row. That's why I'm starting to thin I am crazy!!!

How old is the SD? And can you do a macro pic to help- top of mind would suggest the early onset of a spider crack in the dial's surface black coat.

Well, I took a drive to Ross Simon an authorized Rolex dealer because the watch is under warranty from a Rolex Service in 2011. The Rolex guy there was not knowledgable, said the warranty would not cover the dial and he couldn't see the scratch anyway. He didn't use a loop though.

I was able to illuminate PART of the scratch by playing around with lighting

can't see the scratch, unless it's just to the left of the flash reflection......
and if that's it, it should not be there.........a clean dial is a sine qua non of any high end watch deal, in fact, of any watch deal, IMHO.

i am not a believer in nitpicking a deal, but a scratch on a rolex dial?
that is a deal breaker for me, unless it is disclosed in advance...and I must say, most good sellers on TRF(and there are a lot) always tell you about any imperfections in the dial......now if you're buying vintage, you can usually see
many imperfections in the dial, and bezel insert, and on the case, but then, that's the vintage market, a whole other ballpark.

i'd complain too

Interesting, seems to be a scratch there. Why wouldn't Rolex warranty cover that?

Are you sure that's not a smudge on the crystal? That happens to me sometimes. Have you attempted to clean the crystal just to make sure?

Sounds like a send it back job. What a bummer. Funny, Rolex service would have insisted on a new dial, so I guess they damaged it in putting it back together in 2011?

When I asked the guy about the warranty, first he tried to tell me the warranty only lasts one year even though my warranty card says 2 years. then he said the warranty won't cover the dial because warranty is only on the movement.

Do you think if I took it to a more knowledgable AD they would send it to rolex under warranty? I really love the watch but if it can't be fixed I will have to return it :(

Personally--I would send the watch back and get my money back ASAP! I would not accept that on a watch I just bought--no chance.

I talked to the seller and he offered the refund but also he suggested that I try again to get the dial replaced under warranty by RSC which is what I would prefer.

IMO take the refund and find one that you are satisfied with otherwise other issues may just go on and on.

I would take the refund. Why would you want to buy a watch with problems. Save the headache for later and find a different watch.

...Unless the seller pointed it out before hand and made reductions in the price referring to the damage.

have you looked at it with a loop? can it be a dust or fiber? I traded my YM for a GMT and that had a fiber on the dial but removed by RSC free of charge.

I concur with this also. If you're not happy, send it back ASAP. I don't think you purchased the watch with the intention of having to sort out a scratched dial as soon as you received it.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards this option as well. I just don't want to end up in a situation where it is hard to source another one. The thing I learned out of all of this is that the SD is the perfect watch for me.

I clearly see it. Send that piece of chit back. A Rolex should be eye clean.

Send it back and let the seller get the dial replaced at a RSC. I would not except that and just be on the hunt for another

I used to have a Brand new (black glossy dial) Explorer II which i purchased in 2008 also have a scratch on the dial at the same position with yours,i sent it back to RSC (as it still under warranty) and they are willing to change a new one for me.But very unfortunately, the new replacement dial also have a same scratch but this time at different position... (THIS SCRATCH CAN BE SEEN CLEARLY UNDER A "REAL SUNLIGHT" )
The explaination given by RSC to me is every "Glossy Black dial" of Rolex is wiped before it was fixe into the oyster case, no matter how many times i send back to claim for the warranty, the "scratches" will still be there either at diff angle or position...
I think this should be the reason why nowadays Rolex has to upgrade to glossy black dial to a matte black dial.
And, I also try to go to many AD to check and find out whether other new display Rolex got such an "issue"? The answer is YES !
if u put the Black glossy dial under a sun light without using magnifying glass also can find the "Scratches" easily, this should be considered a defect.
