Sea Dweller crystal prone to chip
Does the taller height of the SD crystal make it easier to whack/chip it?

Yes it does. I have 2 triple sixes and one of them is nicked after a confrontation with a door frame. Very tiny nick, though, but nicked anyway. Since then I take additional care when moving my wrist around.

I somehow feel that its more prone to damage somehow. My friend owns one and had his crystal damaged on the sides.

Well after being used and abused as a tool watch with well over 600 hours underwater salt and fresh no chips on my SD crystals.

Any watch with a crystal where the profile sits above the bezel is going to be prone to chipping. Its the highest thing on the watch and is exposed. I have a small chip on my SubC crystal edge and its one of the lower sitting crystals in the sport watch lineup.
As long as it does not affect the waterproofness, the chips are insignificant. Crystals are a commonly replaced item during a service. Id rather have crystal damage that can be simply reversed with an inexpensive replacement than something more permanent like case dents. |

I just bought a 16600 Z serial. It has small chips at the edge at 12 and 6. You need a loupe to see clearly but they are there. The dealer I bought it from has a new crystal on order for me. Said they can replace it in 30 minutes. Anyone know if it goes in from the top or bottom?

I've managed to chip mine slightly on the edge and also have a very small "spec"of damage on the face of the crystal.
The watch was recently serviced and Rolex did not recommend that the glass be replaced. |
