You can't go wrong with either brand. As others have stated, Rolex has better (or best) name recognition. The Pams are too big on my wrist. Rolex, to their credit, don't follow fads like other brands, and that is a plus to me. The Sub has managed to maintain the same classic look over 50 years. I prefer Rolex, but you should try both on and see.

I really don`t like Panerai watches. Those `re just too big for my taste.
So the answer is Rollie,of course!

Thanks again everyone. I kinda knew what responses I'd be getting...all fair and I appreciate everyone's honesty. I think the Rolex would be the best all-arounder for me. Great under a suit and and equally great on my Ducati (although the Panny is Italian). And now after the incredible pics from Jos...the GMTIIc has got my name all over it ...I'll keep you updated with pics as soon as I get her home!

Panerai

I just bought two PAM's last week and I think they compliment my Rolex collection. I bought the PAM's because I already had all the main Rolex's that I wanted. Both great watches, just different.

I'd choose an Omega over a Panerai ANY DAY!!!
That being said, for 6 grand you cannot go past a 16610. The SS Sub Date wins every time!!

Both are great watches but I prefer rolex. Big watch trend may die later on.

No doubt! The Panarai are simply too big for my taste as well. I love my Sub, lust for several other Rolex references, and have always had a secret desire to sport a Speedy Professional. Panarai just do not possess enough of the "it" factor for me to consider them anything other than overpriced. Sorry, I understand it is a matter of taste and this is my 0.02.

And yes, I do consider a Pepsi GMT to be "high end". They're awesome!

I like Panerai a lot. The simplicity of the designs appeals to me and I think one would make a perfect complement to a Rolex. That said, most of the models are big and I have small wrists. One of the smaller models would probably work for me, but for now it's Rolex all the way. I appreciate that Rolex hasn't jumped on the size bandwagon and remain true to their roots. Some of the watch sizes now are just ridiculous.
