I avoided Rolex for a long time because of its ubiquity and recognizability. Owned several other nice watches from IWC, AP, GO, etc. Finally broke down and bought a Sub-C knowing I could easily flip the watch if needed. Love the Sub. Outstanding watch. A keeper. Still not crazy about the recognizability but I am getting over that notion.

Rolex has become too mainstream today. Everyone wearing it and whever you look you'll see at least three dozens whether you're looking on TV, at cafes, restaurants, school, work... heck... even kids are wearing it today.

Even if Patek is cheaper than Rolex, i wouldnt spent a dime on Pateks - sorry, but i just dont like their design.

As for name, it actually sways me towards Rolex. Good brand name entails good quality, good service, etc. they wouldnt be so well known if they have cr*p quality.

Of the people we encounter on a monthly basis, I'd say less than half a percent of them will notice your watch. Don't over-think things. Compare the comments in this thread to the other threads where people say "no one has ever noticed or commented on my Rolex."

"No one ever notices my watch."
"I don't like Rolex as much because everyone notices it."

I noticed Rolex at a very young age and fell in love. It could have had any name (Timex or Rolex)for all I care, but it was the look, feel, and overall quality that I loved about it and still do love. For me, it is also the best bang for the buck. It is something I can pass down to my sons and I feel they will be able to have them serviced in their lifetimes if the need arises.

I don't think people notice or care. I had a pal who's wife bought them his/her rolex watches. He had a date just. I saw it and said nice dare just and he looked at me and said, no this is rolex ...my point, I think we're giving people too much credit. Most people are too wrapped up in their own existence to even move out of the left passing lane on the highway. We think they are going to spend time noticing your watch? Plus you should buy for yourself not others.

If the budget so allowed, I'd probably end up owning many more non-Rolex than Rolex watches.

I guess most people don't even recognize my gmt IIc. I like Rolex because it is solid.

It is the only jewelry I wear. I also drive toyotas to fly under the radar. Luxury cars attract and create more enemies than friends due to envy and perceptions, unfortunately.

So, I wear my Rolex very happy.

I actually had to decide between a Patek 5116 and a Daytona for my first real nice watch. After looking for quite a while these two were my finalists. What other people would think was not a factor for me since vast majority of people would probably never notice. Both names, to me, spoke heirloom quality.

I simply chose the Rolex Daytona because I thought it would be much more versatile than the 5116, which is a dress watch on leather strap, so it would get more wear.

I am now looking hard at a 5119 or waiting and stepping up to a complication like the 5146.

I wanted a Blancpain fifty fathoms or the newer bathyscape but I couldn't afford it. This is a nice watch if you want to be under the radar to most folks but Wis people will always recognize your blancpain from a distance. ;)

To even suggest Rolex even approached becoming ubiquitous is plain silly...I will tell you that Rolex market market share of th Watch market is nowhere near 1%...
