Looked at a used 16610
Well, I met someone selling his Submariner through Craigslist yesterday. It was an A serial number with X11 on the bracelet. It was in pretty rough shape - dirty too. We met at an AD, and they got upset that we were meeting there, even though he had paid for an appraisal there not long ago.
I told him I was backing out - it would cost me at least $600 for service at RSC to bring it back - plus the gaps between the bracelet links were significant. What I learned: I like the SEL bands a lot more. The non SEL bracelet felt cheap compared to my new Bluesy. A new Omega PO at $2,300 is a much better deal/watch than an older used Sub for more than that. So, I know now that I will not be buying an older 16610. I think I'm going to save up for a 116710, or buy a PO or Speedmaster, instead. The good news is that I'm no longer "hot and heavy" to be getting a SS Rolex. Thanks for the continuing education I receive here.

You did well, David!
I'd wait for the SS GMT IIc where you get all the recent updates that Rolex has made to both bracelet, bezel and movement. But then again, I had a look at the Omega PO chrono recently, and boy that watch is one helluva cool timepiece, and the lume is much better than the one Rolex provides, even the Maxi Dialled SS GMT IIc cannot compete with the lume quality of Omega. One drawback, however, is the poor resale value of Omega.

Sounds like the owner of this Sub was asking too much for it.. and he should have known that it would need a service.
The prices we see over 3k for nearly 10 year old Subs are for those that show minimal wear and maximum care....There is nothing special or rare about them, and one in poor condition should still be sold at a comparably reduced price.... But to say you can get a new PO for the same or slightly less than a ~10 year old Sub is kind of short sighted.. The PO will not likely ever be worth as much as the day you buy it. That Sub will be worth twice the price paid in another 10 years... ...at least..

Agreed about the resale, Bo, but getting it at roughly $2300 USD negates much of the loss from $3000+ MSRP. Decisions, decisions!

as a former Omega owner
As a former Seamaster Pro owner and now Rolex convert having owned a DJ and now own a Sub Date I would get a used Omega and reap the financial benefit of the much larger amount of depreciation Omega's experience. Or save a bit more and get aSub date that is in better shape that may not need a big service anytime real soon.
I used to think Omega was the cat's meow but Rolex does it for me now and I'll bet the same goes 15 years from now as well. |

I like Omegas, but the fact is that the resale stinks. Therefore, if I do get an Omega, it will not be from and AD, but a gray dealer.

At least they use a good 2892 movement in most all the auto's.
Is the Coaxial movement a 2892? |
