Rolex watch RAF officer Great Escape
Timepiece worn by Flight Lieutenant Gerald Imeson at Stalag Luft III camp.
F/Lt Imeson wore watch as he helped dig tunnels for 1944 escape attempt. He queued to join fleeing PoWs before German guards discovered escape. Attempt immortalised in 1963 Steve McQueen film The Great Escape. The story casts light on a surprising marketing enterprise whereby Hans Wilsdorf, Rolex’s owner, sold the watches on credit to British PoWs during the Second World War, allowing them to pay when the war was over.
He only made the offer to British officers because they were seen as honourable gentlemen. They were invited to write to him on postcards explaining their circumstances and whereabouts and which Rolex they wanted.
