What is the difference between the 3186 and 3187 movements?
I know the 216570 has the 3187 movement and the 116710 BLNR has the 3186 movement. They are both GMT's. What's the difference in movements? Thanks.

The 87 is a bit larger for the larger case in the new explorer 2. That's about it

the 3187 comes with Rolex in-house paraflex shock system. Since it is patented, it needs different plates to be able to seat the jewel bushings.
Different plates and shocks means different part numbers - equals a different movement designation.. It is likely that the 3187 will eventually edge out the 3186 as the only dual-time movement for Rolex..

3187s were in 40mm cases, too, so methinks it's the parachrome spring (and "paraflex shock system," per Larry) and its associated parts that are the difference.
Mark (Theken) seems to think my black Z series ExpyII (16570) has the 3187 in it! The polar surely does, I believe, as it's one of the last of them and G series. The black is a Z series!

The 3186 is 28.5mm x 6.45mm
The 3187 is 30.97mm x 6.47mm

Rolex 3186 and 3187 movements
Actually, Craig, I think your late production 16570 Explorer II has a 3186 movement, not a 3187 movement.
The 3186 movement was used in the late production 16750 Explorer II and the late production 16710 GMT-Master II. The ceramic bezel 116710/116713/116718 GMT-Master IIs also use the 3186 movement. Early production 16570 Explorer IIs and 16710 GMT-Master IIs used a 3185 movement without the parachrom blue spring. My understanding is that the 3187 movement is used exclusively in the 42mm 216570 Explorer II. Quote:

Whether 3186 or 3187 deep down they are still based on the 3185 main differences slightly thicker movements and slightly bigger diameter base plates and detent gears.Plus you have the in-house made now escapement parts, but in the real world performance wise would doubt if there was little or no difference.

Well movement would be stamped 3186 or 3187.

The increased size of the 3187 (Diameter of main plate)is just to fill up the extra space inside the case, and in my opinion nothing looks worse than an expansion ring around a movement.
All movement parts in the 3187 are interchangeable with the 3186 with the exception of these 7. 3187-100 main plate 3187-130 winding bridge 3187-270 cannon pinion 3187-280 24 hour wheel 3187-284 12 hour wheel 3187-600 date indicator seating And of course date indicator. Rolex could have taken the easy way and just threw in an expansion ring around the 3186, I'm glad they took the high road and created the 3187.
