Sub or Explorer II

I have a 16610LN and 16570 Polar, the same 2 watches you are considering. I acquired the Sub first, but it has not been on my wrist much at all since I bought the 16570! 16570's 2 time zones are very useful when I travel, it doesn't scream Rolex, and it's definitely more comfortable IMO.

That said, if I had to keep one… it would be the 16610 Sub, because it's THE ICON which I've always wanted and loved. Good luck! Can't go wrong either way.

Why were you hardly wearing the sub in the first place? You mention your issue might be because a few of your friends have subs. If that's the case why go back to it? Get the explorer II, it's not as common as the sub.

Hard to argue with the iconic success of the Submariner. Something to consider however is the Explorer never having produced in precious metal has remained purpose built.

You won't find many Exp2 in the few 2nd hand jewellery shops that sell watches. I work in Hatton Garden and walk past them all each day, no Exp2's. Bi metal Daytonas, DJ's and GMT's in the shops on Greville St etc, but very few s/s Subs and no Exp2's.

You be better off just going into any high street Rolex AD and trying one on, most of them in London (Bond St/Oxford St/Old Bond St etc) have a Exp2 in stock.

And for the record: the Sub may be the most popular model out there - but to put it into perspective, consider this: I was at a get together a few weekends ago, about 10 of us wearing Rolexes/APs. Mine was the only Sub.

Have you ever considered the GMT master II 16710? In my very personal opinion, it has a bit of both: the shiny dents and presence of the sub and the same movement as the EXII, 3185, which has that gorgeous red hand! Also this one can be disguised with 3 different bezels. Lug holes and SEL seems a common recommendation in this forum.

I have a SubC and am now wanting the polar Exp2. I just wish I could buy a glide lock clasp to put on the Exp2 bracelet.

I have a Sub C and an Explorer II (older version). Whilst the Exp2 came first, the Sub C is a better watch overall - it is stunning to look at.

I will always keep my Exp2, but the Sub C is the best watch in the world.

The Sub is for sure the more popular if not most popular model, but for a good reason. The most versatile in the Rolex lineup IMO along side the Explorer. I definitely like both references but between the Explorer II and Sub I'd choose Submariner. Loved the LVC so much I bought it twice

Seems to me that you got rid of the sub originally for work issues and not watch issues. If there's a gnawing feeling in the back of your mind, go with the sub. Unlike other models, you have many choices. Ceramic, Date, no date, LV, precious metal....my 2c's.

Just purchased an Explorer Ii 16550 Black Dial 9 million serial number serviced this past Jan with service papers and 10 months of Rolex Waranty left. Love everything about the watch especially the second time zone. I looked at a Sub but the Explorer II won out. Got a great deal as well as a more than fair trade in price on my Oysterdate.
