Question on new Submariner
Please help a newbie Rolex buyer. I'm considering buying a new two tone blue Submariner, model number 116613LB. In looking at the Rolex for sale section on this website, I see several like new Submariners listed as discontinued models. What's the difference between a NIB and a discontinued model? Would I find a new discontinued model f/s at an authorized Rolex dealer? What would a ''good'' price be for a NIB 11661LB at an authorized dealer? thanks in advance guys, please get me off on the right foot as a newbie Rolex buyer.

Question on new Submariner
Welcome, I can answer the first part of your question.
The TT blue sub has gone several changes in its life. The last three I'm going to talk about. The 16613 has an aluminum bezel and older style bracelet. The "discontinued" 116613 is a newer model with a ceramic bezel and a glidelock clasp and the updated bracelet and "thicker" case with a dial that flat blue in color and you still can find a new one at an AD. The newer version is also called 116613, which is exactly the same watch, but it has a sunburst blue dial (color) and that's the only difference as far as I know. Some people like the flat blue others like the new sunburst dial. I can't speak of prices as I'm not currently in the market for one. Good luck, it's an amazing piece regardless which route you decide to go. |

The newest dial color...dazzles in sunlight with sunburst finish in the metallic blue color.
The previous "discontinued" dial color...it is flatter color blue without the sunburst finish. Both keep time with same movement and work as advertised. Pick the color type you like the most. New ones from ADs will have about the same price. You could find a better deal and ave some tax with a trusted seller here. And the "discontinued" color can be had cheaper on the 1-2 year old pre-owned marketplace. Welcome to TRF!

Welcome to the forum. You should be able to find a new Sunburst TT in the low to mid $11's from an AD.

Being your first Rolex, I would buy a brand new, or unworn as they are sometimes called, from one of the sellers on this site or an authorized dealer if you don't mind paying more. The flat blue dials are still on the market as brand new. The simple way to tell newer Subs (with ceramic bezel inserts, often called SubC) from the older ones is that the newer ones start with 116 and the older with 16.
FYI, you have, in my opinion, selected a superb first Rolex. If you own a macbook air or pro (metal frame/cover), take care that you type carefully or you will get the infamous macbook rash on the clasp. |

Welcome to TRF! Advanced Congratulations on the purchase of a great looking Rolex! I would also buy a BNIB either from the sellers here (better discount) of from an AD. Go look at the two different blue dials, and see which one you like. I personally like the flat blue "Sumrf" dial.

Get the 116613 model with the ceramic bezel and new bracelet and clasp. Choose whichever dial you prefer (for new it's sunburst).
Don't be afraid to tell an AD what price you can get it for elsewhere (trusted seller) and see what they will do... It's a great watch. I bought my one new in 1986!

For the new sunburst I would want at least 20% off, whether from an AD or trusted grey.
