should Rolex make a limit edition ?

Rolex does limited editions, but they aren't trying to sell few hundred watches to a worldwide market and they don't do it very often.

I don't have the details, although others may, but Rolex did a limited edition of one for man in South Africa.

Recently we had a thread about a limited edition of the Explorer II.

There was a limited edition sold only in Japan not long ago.

As noted above, these are not a few hundred watches sold worldwide, but they are for a limited market, a one-off for someone willing to pay, and in one case, for an expedition.

Do I think that Rolex should do what Omega and Bremont and some others do relative to limited editions? No.

I think the problem we get into with though with specific numbers is that too low and the well healed collector snaps them up without the public seeing the light of day. Too many and the value and rarity of the piece is compromised.

That's one of the reasons I mention the above examples. You can get em, but it's$$$

I think 15 K would still be very limited ….. we're talking about Rolex
If AP make a LE it's 1000 or 1500 and AP makes more than 1 LE per year, same story with Panerai, their Special editions are often between 1000 and 2000 pieces

But Panerai makes only 60.000 watches per year and AP probably closer to 40.000
If Rolex makes more or less 900.000 I believe 15.000 would still be a small number.

But 2.000 or 20.000 …. for once I would like it

Let's hope that Dufour continues the traditional approach to change that Rolex has followed for the previous 100+ years.

I respect everyone's opinion but really that fading dial is not a Rolex move, they should have made that piece only for Mr. James Cameron himself. I'm starting to think what would be the future of Rolex.

It's not a LE

The watch has the same reference number, regardless of whether it has the black dial or the 'fade' dial

No...I can't stand paying a premium on a watch just because it's "limited." I buy these things to wear and enjoy, not to sock away in a safe afraid to do anything with it to hurt its collectible value in the future.

But for a watch like the deep blue, I guess they could make it for a few years and then stop. But don't set a limited number or call it a limited edition.

No. I would hate for Rolex to get into the regular "limited edition'' game like Omega. Rolex doesn't need to follow others.

I agree that Rolex doesn't need to make LE's.

But I'm very happy other brands do....one of the main reasons I got into Omegas was because of LE's. I'll admit some work....but most do not.

Where would Omega be without there "Liquidmetal" feature if it wasn't a LE first to hype it up. And what a beauty of a watch.
It's nice to have a watch that not many other's have. It's like the equivalent of owning a gold watch, it's rare and you treat them with a little bit more care.

A small run once in a blue moon wouldn't hurt. But something ala AP, Omega. Hublot, Panerai wouldn't do it for me.

I'd like something completely out the blue. Take the Tudor Heritage Chrono case and do something with that for a small run.
