Help with 5513 valuation

Hi guys, I can use a hand with this one. As some of you know, I recently bought a 5513 in non-running condition. Its currently at Rolex Canada for repair.

Some history of the watch: it was bought by Brother A around 1980, had one factory service in 1995 at which time the bezel pip was replaced. Brother B, a friend, received it around 2000 or so when A passed away. B wore it occasionally until it stopped running some months ago. I was surprised to receive an email from him recently offering it for sale, citing his further declining health and the probable cost of having it repaired.

We agreed on a sale price as-is, which was significantly below what I now believe to be market value. In the meantime, Rolex has contacted me and it just requires a standard overhaul, which is being done now.

Hence, my dilemma. I'm not looking to profit from a friend's misfortune and feel I should reimburse him some more for the watch. What say the vintage community here as to the value?

- 5513 circa 1980, 674XXXX serial number
- MK III dial (I think)
- original dial, hands, bezel & insert (pip was replaced during 1995 service)
- original bracelet, end links and clasp, with bracelet in about 75 - 80% condition
- 1995 service paperwork
- will have current paperwork/warranty card when returned next month, of course

Instructions to Rolex Canada are to give the case a light sympathetic polish only, not to try removing every zit, although the case looked pretty darned good to me with no major divots in it to begin with.

Sorry about the quality of the pix, but they're all I have right now.

How can you expect us to put a number on it, when we have none to work with?
Buy the guy a steak dinner and call it a day. :-)

I'm not quite sure what you mean. I was looking for a current market value of the watch as described.

Personally i think fair is fair. If he was happy with the price u agreed upon, no one was harm. If u still feel guilty, send him what u think is his fair share. But then he would no doubt start wondering if he was undersold. Then again, u could treat him the most expensive dinner for thinking of u first like suggested n call it a day n enjoy ur good fortune. Or u can pay it forward his kindness to me. Lol

Take a look in the for sale section here for comparable 5513 listings.

I'm not an expert by any stretch but decent examples seem to be listed in the 7-10k range. So much depends on overall originality and the dial which are hard to evaluate based on the relatively poor photos you posted.

I like the idea of paying a fair and reasonable price so you can wear it with a clean conscience.
