Bubbleback Crowns

Hi all!
I have this late 40's 14k gold 3131 Bubbleback that to me doesn't look too 'messed' with. (520*** serial)
But... the crown is all steel. Is there anyway it could have originally been like this? Perhaps, covering come off or (as I presume) the crown has been replaced at some time with an incorrect one?
Sorry I don't have a photo right now of a close up, but the crown is Rolex and looks the same shape and style as another 'gold crown' on a 14k Pink gold one I have (517*** serial - second photo)

Yes, either replaced with the incorrect, steel, crown -- or the gold shell has completely delaminated over time.

Agreed and quite possibly the latter.

Actually, if you blow up first photo, it does seem that this is the case (delamination)... You can see that part of the smooth surface of the crown is still intact.
