Rolex service

I see a lot of people talking about rolex services. Do all luxury watches require this? such as omega or panerai watches?

I guess I better started reading more on when your watch needs to be serviced.

All watches do. Less expensive watches aren't worth servicing. Luxury watches usually are.

Quartz models need batteries (every three years?), mechanical models need lubrication, seals, springs, etc. (usually 5 to 7 years is recommended depending on the watch.)

The service cost is usually a double digit percentage of the watch's initial value, more as time goes on.

So generally a typical submariner service will set you back 400-600$? Generally speaking..

I believe right now the Sub/DJ and GMT are all $700 (US).

The Daytona which is just north of $1000 (US).

The Skydweller, YMII and Seadweller must also be more than the GMT/DJ/Subs as well not sure if they are more or less than the daytona.

Maybe someone can chime in who knows the exact numbers.

A good independent watchmaker like Rik Dietel can usually service a Rolex in the 500 dollar range and give you a faster.turnaround. Daytonas are obviously more.

My Oysterquartz is currently with Rolex in their service centre here in the UK. Every two years I have a battery fitted about £75.00 and then every fourth year it has an overhaul. Returned by Rolex like a new watch and 2 year warranty. Bit expensive though at £425.00. Just coming up to its 34th birthday and has never missed a beat.

Recommended service interval is 5-7 years, depending on wear habits.

Now the Oysterquartz uses a SR344 battery and its not rocket science to change it yourself.Even most high street watchmakers could do with the case back tool its only like unscrewing a jar and pressure check after.You can buy a pack of 5xSR344 batteries for around £8 its not like if its some special Rolex certified battery its just a normal run of the mill battery.But there are many mechanical parts in the Oyster Quartz the drive train is the same that's used in the cal 3035 mechanical movement.And when the OQ was first introduced it was more expensive than a Sub,and movement cost to replace was more expensive than the mechanical.

The cell used for the Quartz is actually a 303 or 357 the 344 isn't tall enough. rikki

Some RSCs around the world still honour the pledge of free batteries for the life of the watch, which was offered with a new OQ. I guess not in the UK.
