Which Moon watch?

I wish to buy an Omega Pro Speedmaster Moonwatch.

Trouble is there are so many different codes on these watches.

Been looking at #3570.50.

What serial number should i look at?.

I believe that is as close to the actual moon watch as you can get these days: plastic crystal nd solid back (with soft iron inner case) but it is now an 1861 movement.

Prior is was the 861 (what I have in my Speedmaster Mark II) and the original that actually went to the moon was the 321 caliber. Out of production since the late sixties and commanding a steep premium. The 861 is a great, durable movement and had a very long run before being replaced.

So, I'd look for a used one with the 861 movement. That gives you the patina, and traceability back to when the Apollo program was still running at NASA, at a reasonable price point.

Yes 3570.50 is the one you want, hesalite crystal, solid casebook, manual wind 1861.

It is now called 311.30.42.30.01.005, the only difference is the bracelet has screws instead of pins for removable links and you get a big box with nato, loupe and couple other bits.

I own the 3572.50. Hesalite/Sapphire Sandwich. Great watch if you want to see the movement, which is really beautiful!

The 3572.50 has the 863 movement, basically the same as the 861, just nicer because of the see through case back. I have it also, one of my favorite watches.

Would have been happy with the 3570.50 but could not find one in new condition. Ended up with the successor watch with the not so easy to remember reference number.

Go with a new hesalite...unless ur a serious speedmaster fan i think a new piece that will age with you is the way to go

I'll agree with the 3570.50 gets my vote as well.

The other longer reference only means it comes with that huge box with the strap, and other documentation. Stick with the past 3570.50. Same watch, for less $$$.

That's exactly what I want! The beauty of both Hesalite and the 1863... ! Alas, finding one (in top condition) is easier said than done...

I visited the Omega Boutique and held the .005 and .006 side by side and just couldn't get myself to walk out with either one, feeling that no matter which one I choose, it would be a compromise. There are of course aftermarket exhibition casebacks, but it's a shame to replace OEM gear...

Regarding Sapphire, it's not so much this so-called "grey ring" that bothers me, rather the lack of dial-edge distortion that gives the Hesalite it's vintage feel. My 1950 Luminors both have domed sapphire - the best of both worlds A shame that Omega didn't consider duplicating the exact specs of the Hesalite crystal for their Sapphire. The difference is such that you can't replace the sapphire version with Hesalite, even if you wanted to...

I would go vintage. Try to find a good example with the 861 movement. If your budget stretches and you can get a 321 I imagine that pieces value will grow astronomically!

Skip the hassles of a vintage piece and get yourself a 3570.50. Just can't go wrong!

It should be added that there's no physical difference between the 3570 and .005 (new one) except the change in bracelet (the addition of screws versus friction pins - I consider it an upgrade). Also, the .005 has the BIG box with some goodies, and some superfluities.

The nato is nice, but the rest is (I apologize to those who dig it) pretty fluffy.

Personally, I'd seek out one of the hesalite variants. I personally covet the 3570.40 - the Japanese dial variant. But they make many others, the "patches" for instance.
