This, but if you need to choose than the Daytona. The PP might look old fashioned in 20 years compared to the Daytona.

Can't see a 20 year old being into Patek. I think they good fellows at Patek are a little off with that idea of passing it down unless the target age of the kids would be in their 40/50s.

So I love Patek, but it's much of an adult look than a daytona.
The Daytona, especially the ceramic, will still be new and fresh when you give it to your son. My dad gave me his Root Beer GMT when I graduated medical school and have cherished it ever since. |

Daytona... PP hits me as, for lack of a better term, very old money. People who haven't done anything interesting in 50 years. I'm sure that's wrong but that's my impression outside of a few exceptions.

Patek
Both are timeless so I don't think that's an issue. The bigger issue is whether any Millennial or post Millennial will have any interest in watches at all. For them it's the equivalent of steam punk technology.
Given the choice though I would pick the Patek every time. |

Daytona 500 is my bet. Same birth year as your son. Im sure he will enjoy that when hes 20+ years old. Then get a PP for yourself. Pass it on to him when he gets married or when youre too old to tell time.

i fewt the aquanaut is going to be pretty dated in 20 years (this coming from owner of 5167r) Daytona is the safer bet.

I would go Daytona as its what has me excited right now. Had the 5167 for 2 years and loved it. Just got bored as I do with everything

Get what you like and wear the heck out of it. Then when you pass it on, it will truly be something for your son to remember you by.

Between these 2, I will go with Daytona..However if it's Patek 5711 then it's different case. :)

Golly, very difficult decision for me,,,I have the 5167a and love it,,,understated, sporty, different from anything else out there, gorgeous dial and case,,,and of course as you would expect from Patek, a beautiful caliber. The 5167a is a classic case of less is more. I have owned a 116520 white dial, but it never bonded with me as I found it a bit too shiny and the silver sub-dials I found lacked a bit of contrast. The new 116500 however is almost perfect (although I would have preferred an all brushed bracelet). I have put down a deposit and look forward to seeing it in the flesh. Which I will prefer is impossible to say at the moment without seeing the new Daytona,,,and they are very different pieces. For a young man I think the Daytona would be favourite as it is a very handsome watch with wrist presence, whereas the subtleties of the 5167a might be more appreciated by a more mature person who doesn't need to impress. Reading your requirements I would say the 116500 fits the brief better, but you can't go wrong with either as they are both great choices.

Sports watches aren't heirlooms, regardless of who makes it.

Both are solid - go with the one you like more. Also consider the 5711

Congratulations, don't be surprised if he prefers to wear an Apple watch (next generation)!. My little nephews all prefer it against my sub Cs, i refuse to buy a smart watch.
