Sizing a New Rolex at AD before purchase.

Hello all,

Is it unreasonable to ask for a new Rolex to be sized before you make a purchase of a new watch?

Im in a position where the bracelet is too big so the only real way out is take out a link.

Surely its important to obtain the right fit before spending the hard earned on a model?
At the same time do removing links devalue a watch for the AD if you choose not to buy?
I got the impression it seemed very frowned upon at the ad's today.

How do you all get on? Do you buy and then hope it feels right?

I do not know any AD that would ever size a watch ahead of a purchase!! My ADs would never do that!!

You would be best trying a used one on somewhere to make sure ahead of buying the piece if you had doubts.

I've never had a bracelet sized before buying. I doubt anyone but a desperate AD would do so unfortunately.

That is, would you like to buy a watch with "the hard earned" that's been tapered with...? I wouldn't, which is why I only buy from an old and well known AD.

As a matter of fact, I wouldn't trust an AD that would do something like you are requesting.

I don't ever see that happening. Just have to use your imagination by holding the bracelet tight with your other hand.

I have a small wrist, so I just bunch up the bracelet with my right hand and that's enough for me to tell if the bracelet is the kind that's going to grab the hairs on my wrist or not.

I think you would have to purchase it before sizing not the other way around

I won't even let an AD size my watch AFTER I purchase it. The typical salesman at an AD is more likely to damage the screw head or the link than I am which is why it is not advisable. And then of course there is no telling if they remember to use Loctite when they put the bracelet back together.

I normally get the question "are you happy with it? as once I size it, it's yours"

I think we can all agree on the reasoning as to why it is not possible however with the outlay on all models wouldn't it be nice to have a way of simulating how each model feels so one can decide which model suits the wrist best.

Most of my decisions have been made on how the watch looks, and not always on which model feels more comfortable on the wrist.

Comfort has always been a main factor for my flipping, not great as I always buy new.

You can get an idea on which watches are more comfortable on here.

From reading and personal experience I know that GMT is more comfortable generally than SDC and Sub..,PST are more comfortable than SDDS, and explorer 1 is very comfortable .

Also by holding the watch on your wrist you get an idea of weight and feel/dimensions etc.

Als remember that stickers can make a watch feel a watch feel uncomfortable and "jaggy" sometimes. Also it can be warm or cold in the AD so comfort may not be a true reflection. Brief sizing at the AD would not give you a true reflection on comfort.

I've bought about 12 different SS Rolex models brand new over the years and never had a chance to size them before deciding and I've always been fine :)

Thanks Nairn. GMT looks to have a near flat back, I think this the key so will be exploring this option next.

Agree exp39 comfy, could sleep in mine. Think all 39mm feels great though

That's the way to do it. I wouldn't have the nerve to ask an AD to size a watch before I bought it. I doubt that they would do it anyway.

Wow,

My AD has always sized my watch before buying.

I certainly would NEVER have purchased my SD4K without having it sized
first. It took 3 attempts to get it right, and then........Bingo.....away it came

I suppose that's the beauty of having an authorised Rolex "workshop" on site.

However, there are a few AD's I have visited that I wouldn't trust.

My AD took two YG DD40s and let me borrow a link from one to see how it fit on mine. Of course they knew I was buying one so it wasn't just tire kicking going on.

Heck they even ordered a 1.25 link under no obligation as well for me to try.

Daytona is a dreamboat. Agree on the gmt it's great. YM is tops as well.
