07, 08 Daytona series question...
So uh....
I'm out and about the other night at a social function and meet another Rolexer (he was really a pompas-ass but that's a whole other story). He complimented me on my Daytona and asked me what year it was. Since I bought it in February, I told him an 08, and casually add it's a "Z" series. He begins to lecture me on how wrong I am. If it's a Z, and I bought it on February of 08, the watch MUST have been made in 07, therefore it's an "07" model. He was a SUPERB example of people you meet and just want to pop them in the nose, but over-looking that, his lecture made me ponder a couple points, hopefully one of you really smart TRFers can answer. 1. WHY, does he care? 2. IS there any validity to what he said? I really don't care, but for curiosity sakes, would my watch technically be an 07 or an 08? 3. WHY, does he care? You know, I've really got to get a social life and stop hagning out in the places I meet people like him... |

Technically it is an 06-07 model - regardless of when it was sold. Seems like an odd argument to pick though.

If you check the Rolex FAQ Here it states that a Z was made from May 2006 to July 2007.
It really does not matter though since the watch has not changed anything from 06 to now. Your warranty will be from the date of your purchase in 08. Be carful to who you show your watch to....in today's economy they might be waiting out the door ...... if i feel unconfortable with some one looking at my watch in a public place and they seem shady i always say mine is a "fake" just to be safe.

I agree with chicagowatchman. Be careful about who you talk to regarding your watch.
My watch is for my pleasure, so I don't care what others think. It makes me smile and that's all that is important to me. |

If you bought it on '08, then it is an '08 model. There is no possible way to tell exactly when it dropped off the end of an assembly line (or what month "Z"'s started or ended) as Rolex does not release that information..

Thanks for that bit of information...... How then do we see the large number of sites that post the information including TRF under FAQ...is everyone just guessing?

The only thing we know to be true is that during September of 2008, you can still buy a brand new in the box "Z", "M", and "V" model... The lists that are produced are only really good at giving you an estimate of when a watch, without papers that show otherwise, may have been manufactured.... but since they are based on when a series first appeared, then practically all other watches are likely newer than the list..

I bought a platinum masterpiece in 2000 thought is was a good way to mark the millenium.... I wanted a "P" series and got it , but since this watch was introduced a few years earlier they were not as available as they are today and i waited 4 months to get it in Oct 2000.

Do you just love guys like that. Who really cares. It is a great watch that many others (myself included) would love to have. I would take one from any series.

So did Rolex start doing the engraving on the rehaut in 06? For some reason, I thought it was last or this year.

Regardless of the Alpha code or date purchased, the only reason the serial is of any significance is features (ie, movement, spring, enhancements such as etched crystal or CRB). To my knowledge, there have been no enhancements in the stainless daytona in quite some time and since it was purchased new in 08 and the warranty begins on the date purchased the serial is of no consequence.

I would say the Case was made during a certain period of time. When does Rolex actually put the movement of ship out of factory is unknown.

100% correct and the most important part of any watch is its engine and not when Rolex stamped the case.

Z series began in 2006 and continue into 2008. My dealer received a new Z series GMT the end of July 2008 that he was trying to sell me. I ended up with the M series which had the new 3186 movement.
