The little secret that most people don't know is that if you buy the right Rolex not only will it retain its value, but after 10 or 15 years it will actually earn you money.

Many people think I am Richie Rich because I had 6 Rolexes in my collection. In reality, it's just another way to invest one's money. In the end, 4 of my 6 selections will completely pay for themselves and the other two and give me some pocket change to spare.

So if you buy the right Rolex you don't have to concern yourself with losing money. You only have to concern yourself with not having that cash as a liquid asset for, say, 10 years as opposed to one that's tied up in a luxury timepiece. For me, that first Rolex put a little dent in my fun money budget but not once did I look down upon my Submariner and see it as a waste. In fact, I will wind up with 20 years of enjoyment and then get every penny back I paid and then some.
This is so true. If you take your time and buy the right pieces they make you money over time. All of my watches but one have greatly increased in value. To me they are investments and a way to tie up my extra cash so I don't spend it on something stupid...or my wife does. haha. I can always sell one if I need to and make my money back and more. I might be going the wrong way about this but where other people I know are dumping all of their money into RRSP's and tax free savings accounts where they make maybe 3% per year, my investments in older Rolexes have made me more in two years then their investments have in ten.

Just my thoughts.

No guts no glory

Serious, I understand, been there, but you only live once and spending cash on a nice watch is really quite responsible compared to spending on cars or boats.
Buy from a trusted seller and in case you have to liquidate the hit will not be so hard as when bought from an AD. Making money on a new model over time is not likely to happen. In return you get this wonderful feeling looking at your wrist

Are they pricey...you bet....but amortized over the lifespan of its intended usage and you'll no doubt A. Get your money's worth and or B. Recoup a large portion of your investment readily easily, should you decide to sell/trade.
I started the watch game with Omega...was alright with them for a few years. Bought my first Rolex and haven't looked back since. You won't regret the decision and if you do they're readily easy to liquidate.

I definitely understand the first Rolex feeling. I Don't own one yet, but I intend on getting an Explorer I soon to celebrate a couple milestones. I've always made the "conservative" financial choice: truck has almost 200k miles, rented out portion of first home, etc...so getting comfortable with splurging a bit on myself has taken time.

Really my dilemma now is just deciding whether to go the AD route with low likelihood of discount or buying BNIB from trusted seller. For my first, I want it brand new so even trusted sellers, one only saves a bit on top of the (still significant) tax savings

Since you are considering a Rolex I say go for it. You can always find a way to make more money.

If you can afford it (e.g., you don't have credit card debt hanging over your head) go for it. If you buy used you can always get your money back, and even if new it won't lose that much value (think of it as a rental charge (-;). I sweated buying mine and justified it by knowing I could always sell it. I haven't regretted the purchase at all.

9. Peel off the stickers.
10. Don't wear it with bezel protector.
11. You can wear it when you do [insert any activity here].
12. The water proof rating is good enough for rain or doing dishes at sink.

Buy right and you won't lose any money should you regret and decide to sell. However, choose carefully. If you buy PM, you're going to take a hit. If you buy a SS sports model (especially Sub, BLNR) then you'll be fine.

100% agree

Buy it, wear it, use it, enjoy it. Life is too short

It has to be supplemental funds. Fundamental expenses and expenditures first. Once that's done, I feel it's the best money spend. A solid piece of kit that will last forever, a little Care and service and it will survive you, besides being a nice benchmark in life and subtle jewelry. And it's useful eveyday of the week...

There should be a law against driving and watch admiring cos it's so distracting!

Agreed. Don't do something just to do it. Don't stretch for it. And don't do it unless you're sure about the whole thing.

It's not that important.
